onyx keeps freezing. spinning beachball

had an old version installed. updated. new version does the same thing. soon as I try repairing permissions, it freezes up. does this happen to anyone else? Im using version 3.3.1 on Sierra.

How long have you let it run?
What Mac, model, year and specs?
How big (GB/TB) is your drive?
Is the drive SSD or HDD?
How much space is used/free on the drive?
When was the last time Onyx ran successfully on your Mac?

I have a Late 2014 Mac mini with HS and a 500GB SSD and OnyX may take up to 10 minutes to run the Automated tools.

Maybe you can run EtreCheck, https://etrecheck.com/? It only scans your system and lets you know if there are any issues that need to be looked into.

When OnyX is running that kind of check, if the drive is large, or has a lot of files, it can take a really long time to finish, and during the process the spinner will appear. Just let it run, it will eventually get done.

I waited about 4 minutes and it worked. it's never done this before so I thought it was odd behavior. come to think of it, I have a 1TB hard drive now on this newer mac. I use to run onyx on a 250GB drive so that would explain why it's taking longer I suppose.

does seem odd that a program would do this sort of thing when running, like it's freezing. no other programs on my mac do this when I'm using them.

Well, when OnyX is running checks on the boot drive, the OS is isolated from the boot drive during that check. So the OS doesn't get to do stuff that would make the beachball go away. That's a rough way to say that it's normal for OnyX. Another way is to say that OnyX takes over the OS to do its thing, which causes a beachball. Either way, it's normal.

The screenshot you posted shows that OnyX is not responding and invites the only solution, Force Quit.

Or have things changed since your post?

I am assuming that the version of OnyX you are running is the one specific to your current Operating System?

At a pinch, you could uninstall OnyX and re-download it again - from the developer’s site and only from there and the version appropriate to your OS.

Ian, OnyX doesn't respond to the OS while it's running the disk checks. It's normal. The OS thinks something is wrong but it isn't. He's running the most current version for his version of the OS, so that's all good. He just needed to be patient and the process eventually finished.
