Is there a way to get back the old way of having the Image Capture app open when I attach an SD card with pictures on it? The card comes from a camera and with the new Photos app, it wants to grab the images. I told it not to assuming it would then bring up Image Capture, but not so. With all the functionality in OSx I would think there would be a way to tell it to open Image Capture when it found a camera or SD card attached. Ideas?

Thanks.

Have you checked your Image Capture Preferences for the setting and option that you want?

That's were it used to be set as I recall, unless Apple changed things with their latest OS, and I'm not there yet!!

Unfortunately there are zero preferences for Image Capture on El Capitan. Nothing in the menus either. Almost like they are just keeping it around, but don't expect anyone to use it.

I think you will find it is a setting in System Preferences > CDs and DVDs.
Where it says When a Picture CD is Inserted it will probably say Open Photos by default. Click the menu, choose Open Other Application and navigate to Image Capture.
Or Open Image Capture,
Insert your SD card
When it comes up in devices select it
At the bottom right corner of the window there should be a little triangle icon (it may be on the left I can't check at the moment I'm on my phone)
From here you should be able to select the app to launch or no Application.

As said I'm not sure if this will work, just an idea I could not test.

I just tried it. It should work but it does not. I did a search and others are having the same issue. No setting I found will make Image Capture open when you insert either a camera or Card that i tried here. Apple, what did you do? :D Grin

All I can suggest for now is in Photos disable it opening when you plug in the card and then just manually open Image Capture.

Spoke too soon! Got it working. First be sure Photos is disabled from opening your card or camera. Then with the card mounted open Image Capture. At the very BOTTOM and to the Left you will see a small clicker with Up Arrow. Click that and choose what app opens! Image Capture is there. Now every time I plug in my card it opens! If you get stuck let me know.

I am in the latest El Capitan 10.11.1

I'm still using Mavericks OS as the latest so I can't test the latest OS X changes, but does this suggestion not work?:
How to Stop Photos Opening Automatically on Mac OS X when iPhone or Camera Connects
http://osxdaily.com/2015/05/31/stop-photos-opening-automatically-mac-os-x/

And note the Note:
Note that you will only find the option to turn off automatic Photos opening when a particular device is connected to the Mac. Thus, if you want to stop Photos launching when an iPhone is connected, you would need to connect that iPhone to the Mac before being able to access the setting in Photos of OS X.

Man, that's getting to be pretty absurdly minimalist indicator I'd say, and probably bigger than Jony Ive would like and no doubt will continue to get worse with him involved with programming these days. :[

With my aging eyes I had to Squint to see it! Come on Jony, make it so small you will need a Magnifying glass to see it! :D Grin

I have a feeling Steve Jobs is turning over in his grave!

Ah, I beg to differ;

@Rod: That's not what my System Preferences looks like from my copy of El Capitan. Remember... machines that do not have an optical drive will not have CDs & DVDs as a choice.

Interesting. Never thought of that as all my Macs are old enough to have an optical drive! :D Grin

Same here, but just curious what happens if one has an external optical drive connected, do they get any of Apple's latest OS X DVD/CD stuff installed??

Huh? What does Apple offer on DVD or CD any more? All Apple's latest operating systems and programs are download only. Even Microsoft Mac Office 2016 is download only as it is not sold on disk.

That's why I put in the second method.
