I understand that Apple will no longer support OS X 10.9.5 Maverick. On some web sites I get an unsafe message. Can this problem be addressed or do I need to through out my Mac which is 2012 vintage?

Websites generally do not show you unsafe message based on the OS version. Can you please show a screenshot of what you are seeing.

Your 2012 Mac can be upgraded to 10.13 High Sierra and you absolutely should upgrade to at least that until it's time to upgrade the Mac itself.

How can I upgrade my Mac?

Apple menu -> App Store. Look for High Sierra and download/install it.

You can't upgrade because there are no new upgrades for Mavericks.

Is it possible/likely that the message that is appearing is the same one that others are seeing about expired security certificates? If that's the error in question an OS change won't fix that. It's still a good idea though.

I can't answer that question, @Bubbly . It is pretty straightforward, but if you are a total novice, it might help to have someone who is a bit more tech-savvy help you. No need for a full on tech, just someone who can read/understand and execute the steps of the process for you. A knowledgable friend or neighbor or relative would be enough.

My grand daughter is computer literate so I will rely on her to install High Sierra. Can the installation be done without removing Macericks?

macOS upgrades are usually done on top of each other. After some number of upgrades, people find that it's better to do a clean install. This, however, requires some legwork on your part of backing up everything and having the installers for apps you use and so on so that you can restore stuff back to the way you want it.

This was the message which was the basis for my first post.

The instructions to upgrade are very straightforward.
  1. Visit the page that Jake mentioned a few posts above
  2. At the bottom click on the link macOS High Sierra under the Use Safari to download...
  3. A prompt will appear to open the Mac App Store, click Open
  4. The Mac App Store will open directly on the High Sierra page
  5. Click on Get to download High Sierra
  6. It will take a little while to download the installer depending on your Internet connection
  7. Once the download finishes, the Get button becomes Open, click on it.
  8. The High Sierra installer will now start, hit Continue and point it to to your Macintosh HD (there should only be one) and wait for about 45 mins for it do it's work.
  9. Once the installation finishes, the machine will restart and you'll be in High Sierra.

You could leave Mavericks on your old drive, install HS to the new SSD, test that it boots fine, then swap them. That way if the install goes south, you still have the internal working.

To add to Ashwin's list

10. At the first prompt to do so, use Migration Assistant to migrate your account from the old drive to the new. That way, when you log in on the new, you use the same name and password as you do on the old, and everything should be where you are familiar with it.

One other thing. Look for the "offer" to turn on File Vault. I would recommend turning it OFF and not using it. Unless you are an accountant for the Mafia, you don't need FV. (and if you ARE an accountant for the Mafia, please don't tell me...) :)

A big +1 to the above, very few of us need to encrypt our Hard Drive.
As always, I really suggest you first backup your existing Hard Drive. A USB Connected External Hard Drive of the same size as your internal HD or greater will do the job using Time Machine which is built in to your existing system.
Note; it may take some time (Hours) to perform a first backup depending on the storage size of your HD.

If you want to stay with OS X Mavericks 10.9.5 but want to have and used a supported browser and avoid those pop ups, the enhanced version of Firefox works very well.

PS: I still use OS X Mavericks 10.9.5 with my 2011 27in iMac.

@pm-r Are you getting the popup screens? I'm wondering about the security certificate errors others have reported seeing.

Yes Bubbly, many people have had this problem. It is an issue for the web sites themselves. It was known well in advance that many site's SSL certificates would expire in November this year but despite that some did not renew and even for those that did our browsers may look for the old certificate and not seeing it label the site as untrustworthy or unsafe.

Here is a good article on the topic of Lets Encrypt certificates; Some Mac and Android users experience website connection issues caused by expired Let's Encrypt certificates - gHacks Tech News

It's my understanding that there are a couple of ways this may be fixed. BUT in the above article Let's Encrypt released lists of platforms that may run into issues from September 30, 2021 onward (and those that should not). Included on this list (see article) are macOS before 10.12.1 so if you are running MacOS Mavericks 10.9.5 you may have an ongoing problem.

As previously mentioned with your device Bubbly, you could update to High Sierra 10.13.6

If your rather not do this there are a few suggested methods that may help.
1. Clearing your browser cache and cookies.
2. Open Key Chain Access, Click login in the left panel, then click Certificates under "Category" in the left. Delete the certificate that's giving you trouble by right-clicking it and selecting Delete.
3. Apparently it's also very important to check your system Time and Date are correct.

Lastly, let me say i'm running High Sierra on a 2010 Mac Book (white unibody model) and it works very well so I'm sure you would find the same with your 2012 iMac. Having said that, High Sierra is "unsupported" too but as a much later OS its capable of running browsers and apps that are.

Slydude, I am afraid to say anything in case it changes something, but no I am not getting any pop up screens when usingGoogle Chrome or Firefox.

I don't bother using Safari as it quit working properly on too many sites years ago.
