MacBook running OS X 10.6.8 and receiving messages that I can no longer update operating system (due to age of my Mac I guess). Also receiving messages that I will no longer be able to update Chrome, Safari or FireFox.

Problem now is I can load this page: http://thechronicleherald.ca/announcements/obituaries/date
But when I try to open individual obituaries, they come up blank. Any ideas???
Is the newspaper making them only available to IE users??

thanks,

JustJulie

Have you tried accessing the pages in all three browsers? Same results in each?

What version of Firefox and Chrome do you have?

We need to know the exact model and year of your mac to know if the OS can be updated. Click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner of your screen. Select About This Mac and in the widow that opens give us all the information listed. Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6) was updated to 10.6.8 back in 2011, but newer OS's may still work on your machine. You can look in the Mac App Store (in your Applications folder or Dock) and see if El Capitan (Mac OS X 11) is supported by your mac, but it may not be.

I've already tried several times to update and it says my machine is not compatible. It has something to do with changes after the manufacture date of my machine.

Hi Julie

The individual obituaries don't open on my Safari either (version 9.1.2; OS El Capitan 10.11.6). I suspect they've probably not opened on any version including yours, which must be quite dated by now.

They do on Firefox (version 48.0 same as you - has it ever worked in your FF? I don't think you actually said). They also open on Chrome (version 52.x). Your version of Chrome is a bit dated however.

I couldn't find any earlier of your posts to these Forums so I don't know if we've been involved in the upgrade question. I'm really trying to find out how you came to understand that your Mac OS could not be upgraded beyond what you have just now.

If this question has been solidly dealt with, fair enough; but it might be worth sharing with us the exact specs of your Mac. As Bob advised in post #3, clicking on the Apple icon and then "About This Mac" & telling us what it says would help. For example, at the top of the list on my Mac it says - Version El Capitan 10.11.6, then underneath that it says - iMac Retina 5K 27 inch, late 2015 etc, etc. That's the info we need along with the other stuff in that window.

Perhaps, just perhaps, you can upgrade. Worth revisiting??

Sadly, I suspect an upgrade may be your only solution to the browser problems you've experienced.

The obits open in my Safari, 9.1.2, OS X 10.11.6 just fine. They look like images of the actual paper articles.

Julie is correct as it seems Chrome can not open the obits. I have the very latest 64 bit version of Chrome (54.0.2824.0) and it won't open the individual obits.

Works fine in Safari v.9.1.2 and Mac OS X.11.6, but then opening the actial obituaries it is blank. Could it be a pay subscription for obituaries as mine is for my old home town? For me finding out whom I have outlasted comes at a cost!!! Julie tell us the precise details of your Mac which we still do not know. Snow Leopard being is old, unsopported by Apple with security updates for years now and many secure sites will not accept old, weak encrycption.

The fact you are running Snow Leopard shows your machine is an Intel model and all were capable of running Lion OS X.7 at least. You cannot update Safari as that is tied to the operating system.

Harry, When I try with my Safari v9.1.2 and OS X.11.6, it all works fine, including opening the obits for details. So it's not pay, as I've never been to the site before. Don't know what's the difference between me and you.

Opens absolutely fine for me in Chrome 51.0.2704.103 (64-bit) on 10.11.6.
See if you can open this link: http://thechronicleherald.ca/sites/...20160818145425_000+20582139_Ad.jpg?1471584629

That's the actual obit image that this page attempts to load: http://thechronicleherald.ca/obituaries/1389656-carter-nance-delia

I suspect you can NOT open the second one.

If you can, then the problem is with the page that actual -renders- the content as the obit itself is nothing more than an image file that gets loaded. And, if you can't fully / properly render the master page to get it to open the image, then there's a compatibility issue with [likely] javascript.

Opens the obituary page, but clicking on individual names brings a blank page. Javascript it must be.

It was the same with me, Harry, as I posted in #6. The obit pages failed to open but did for chscag and Jake. I only got the obit pages to open in FF and Chrome. In the same post, I encouraged Julie (the OP) to share in detail her Mac specs because I too found it hard to understand why she believed, or was told, the her Mac could not be upgraded at all.

This is why I feel mine can't be upgraded: Chances are, your Mac can run El Capitan.

Mac computers introduced in 2009 and later, and some models introduced in 2007 and 2008, can be upgraded to El Capitan.

I've tried and a message pops up to say my machine is not compatible: "We could not complete your purchase. This version of OS X 10.11 cannot be installed on this computer."

Cannot open that second link. Pages work fine for my husband on his PC laptop. They used to work for me in all three browsers but over time each browser stopped loading them. The most recent being Chrome.

My machine is an early 2008 model but I did add 2GB memory to it a year or so ago.

If I looked up the correct machine in MacTracker it can only be upgraded as far as 10.7.5 which may or may not resolve your issue.
