Hi,
I recently upgraded from Mavericks straight to El Capitan, and of course I've been dealing with the consequences ever since :(

Now being introduced to "Photos". But mysteriously, with my iPhone connected to my Mac, the Import tab in Photos is just blank. There are some videos on my phone, so I thought it might just be taking a while to load, but I wait and wait and it doesn't change. No spinning beach ball, etc.

Any idea what would cause this or how to fix it?

Did you give the phone permissions to trust the Mac when you connected?

If you run Image Capture and connect to your phone can yo see the pictures/videos to be imported in that application?

The "trust this computer" question hasn't popped up.

Same issue in Image Capture. My iphone shows up there, but if I click on it, it shows me "zero items".

Disconnect and restart you phone. Take 1 new picture. Try photos and image capture again

Which version of iOS are you running

iOS 8.4.1. I'm afraid to upgrade because this is an iPhone 5, and historically a new OS on an old device has tended to slow performance too much.

Tried reconnecting and all, no dice...

Well, there are members who own an iPhone 4S and are successfully running iOS 9.1, and my wife's 5C is running it without any slowdowns whatsoever. Since you're also on El Capitan that means you have the latest iTunes installed so you should be OK to upgrade.

Agreed. 9.1 is fine on a 5.

But either way you should be seeing the pictures when connected.

OK.
1. Does it show up in iTunes ok?
2. Have you tried a different cable?
3. If you connect the phone to another computer does it offer to import pictures?

Hi,

1. Yes. No problems in iTunes.
2./3. Just tried connecting it to my daughter's Mac with her cable. Same problem: import tab shows nothing.

You can try to reset your trust settings - it's odd you aren't getting prompted . . .
Settings > General > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy

Well, my daughter's computer did cause the "trust" prompt to come up, because I'd never connected the phone to that computer before.
