PowerMac G4 MDD Hard Drive Installation

Hi, ok so i am fairly new to the internals of computers. I am a technically minded person. I rebuild 2 stroke Motorcycles on a regular basis.

I've run out of space on my mac and need more HD space. Ive bought a Seagate 7200.10 hard drive. It is pictured below. I was told this is the right one for my mac, however the power and data connectors are different.

Do i need an adapter? If so what is it called and where would i source one?

Your machine requires an ATA type drive. The bottom photo looks like it might be SATA which will not work. Return it for an ATA model (if available). Both photos, especially the top one are blurry so it's hard to determine exactly what you have.

Good point ... "if available"! ATA drives are getting harder to find, so get in soon (I'm doing likewise - see entry in Other HW and Peripherals).

There are good vids on YouTube about installing hard drives inside Mac tower machines.

I found that out the other day. I was trying to locate a 250 GB ATA 2.5" drive for a project I'm working on. Almost impossible to find one. Best Buy no longer stocks them, nor does any of our local vendors here in Fort Worth area. The only availability I could find was from several on line sellers.

However, you think that's bad? I'm now looking for a 1" micro drive 4 GB or 6 GB to replace a dead drive in an iPod Mini, vintage 2005!

If you want to make things easier in the future, you might purchase an OSX compatible PCI SATA controller card. It might cost a bit but that way you can use a SATA drive and like Chscag and Hugh stated, IDE (ATA) drives are getting harder and harder to find.

They are quite expensive, but here is a PCI SATA card that will work.
