I am running OS Sierra on 27" iMac. I used Image Capture to download pics from my iPhone 5s, which came as jpeg files. Preview will not open the jpeg file, telling me the file may be damaged or in a format Image Capture does not recognize. Image Capture showed the thumbnail of each photo in it's confirmation with green check mark. Any thoughts?

Try changing the file extension from *jpeg to *jpg and give Preview another try. Let us know.

Thanks, the file extension is jpg, i.e. IMG_3590.JPG the .MOV files cannot also be opened with Quicktime. A brief window opens showing the file "converting", but then quits with the message that Quicktime cannot open it.

OK, then that might indicate file corruption. If you want... attach one of those image files to your next reply and I'll try to open it here. As for the .mov files, you might try opening them with the free VLC application which you can download from here.

I just tried to upload on of these .jpg files and received the message that "the file is not a valid image file". Interesting note for a picture on the 5s that was directly downloaded with Image Capture onto my Mac (apple to apple)

VLC would also not play the .mov file

The mov files should have played natively with Quicktime and for sure with VLC so there is something wrong with them. Also, the JPG files should open with Preview. And since you can't upload them to us because they're not a valid image file, that tells us there's a problem with them too.

Can you try downloading the pictures from your 5s again to your Mac and give them another go with Preview and Quicktime?

Does the iPhone play the movie and let you view the images?

Here are some answers.
1) the pics and videos play on 5s
2) previously used Image Capture to download pics onto older iMac running OS 10.7.5
3) those downloaded pics and videos showed fine
4) This time Image Capture would not download on the older iMac, with a message that "the phone was locked" even when it was not
5) Image Capture does work on newer iMac running Sierra, but pics and videos cannot be opened, giving messages that the files seem to be corrupted.
6) Having upgraded to the latest IOS on the 5s, I'm wondering if this becomes the source of the problem.

Thanks for engaging on this

It sure sounds like the problem is with your 5s. I'm assuming by latest iOS on your iPhone you're referring to iOS 10?

So...
1) The 2005 iMac still believes the iPhone is locked (when not), not allowing downloads by Image Capture.
2) Tried again the 2011 iMac on Sierra downloading to my Synology NAS (as before) and received same corrupted files.
3) Tried yesterday by just downloading onto iMac HD and all worked ok.
4) Copied one working pic file to NAS and back to corrupted file.
5) Copied one working pic file to my OTW DAS and it works.
6) conclusion...something weird going on with Synology NAS
7) Any thoughts??

Thanks for all inputs

That would be my assessment. I don't have any suggestion to fix it as I don't have a Synology NAS myself, but is there any setting for pictures for it?

You have said that the phone was not locked when connecting to the 2005 iMac. Have you checked when the iPhone is connected that you have opened the phone to the home page? ie entered your passcode or used fingerprint recognition to open it?
There could also be some comparability issues between the OS used on the 2005 iMac and the 27" iMac not to mention iOS 10 which I think you said you had just updated to.

Yes we did check that, with no result. It would seem my overarching issue is now why the Synology NAS cannot handle this Image Capture downloads of .jpg files. I am keeping my iPhotos library on the Synology NAS with no problems.
