Since I upgraded to Sonoma 14.4.1 I've been having intermittent problems with my MacBook Pro printing to my HP printer. Sometimes it prints fine other times it says no printer detected. When the latter happens, I restart the laptop and all of the printer jobs in the queue begin printing as the laptop is booting up. Any ideas as to why this might be happening?

Not much help; but have you updated to the latest version of Sonoma - 14.5?

Strange things happen after an update, most for better, some worse.

As Ian suggested updating to Sonoma 14.5 may help - check out this article on Sonoma 14.4 interfering with printing - also might help if you tell us which HP model you own and whether you're printing 'wired' or 'wireless' over your Wi-Fi network (using AirPrint or other?). Dave

How is the printer connected? Cable, wifi? If wireless, it could be something in the network is letting the printer "disappear" from the net.

Join the Club. I did exactly the same a few days ago when I was responding to @AMACL.

There were recognised peripheral device connection issues with 14.4.1, supposedly fixed in 14.4.2 but since updating to 14.5 I have had no issues, both of our MacBooks did receive updates for our Epson printer/scanner apps, not sure about HP.

Try resetting the printing system on your Mac:

If that doesn't work, here is how to troubleshoot the problem:

If all of that fails, then it's time to use a bigger hammer. Uninstall the printing plists and rebuild them. Move them to the Desktop from the two directories below. Reboot (to restart CUPS, etc). Then reset things in the Printers pane of System Preferences/Settings.

~/Preferences/com.apple.print.*
and
~/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.print.*
