hi guys

how do I figure out what's causing Mac OS Monterey to stop saying your computer was shut down due to an error

when all I did was ask it to reboot ?

Why did you want it to reboot? Maybe if you did a full shutdown (click on the  icon upper left, then "Shut down..." and let it power down. Wait 5-10 seconds, then power up again. That way everything gets to close properly and maybe the "error" flag will clear.

Thanks for the reply

the strange thing was I shut it down last night before I went to bed as we had a storm.

I powered it on and it’s saying it shut down due to an error and everytime I boot it up I get the same error but nothing was running while I shut it down.

Maybe even do a Safe Boot, and then a normal Restart which may clean out some other excess surplus stuff... 😇

I would try resetting the SMC which controls the various power settings. Sounds like your iMac may have gotten "mixed up".

hi guys booting in safe mode the issue don't exist.

I did an SMC reset with no change.

if I boot normally the issue comes back.

could something be booting that's causing this problem ?

hi guys booting in safe mode the issue don't exist.

What possible third party items do you have listed in your system preferences/users & groups/login items that could be causing the problem.

If you don't know which would be understandable, try deleting a few at a time and see if things change or hopefully improve. 😉

You can also run Etrecheck to see what is loaded into the system at boot time (normal). That may show things that load for ALL users, not just your own account.

Thanks for the reminder Jake, for some reason I always seem to forget about using (or suggesting) Etrecheck for diagnostics etc. for some odd reason.

I don't see any obvious threats in the listing. You have Java loaded, which you might consider ditching unless you really need it. Java is full of security holes. You also save something called
"/Library/LaunchAgents/u-bensova.Patched-Sur.Daemon.plist" and "/Applications/Patched Sur.app/Contents/MacOS/Patched Sur" listed under the Clean Up: section. That would seem to imply that you are running a patched Big Sur?

And this seems recent:

User Launch Agents:
[Loaded] com.valvesoftware.steamclean.plist (Valve Corporation - installed 2022-01-26)

So, from that, do you have a patched Big Sur installation, running Java and Steam? Don't know if they are the culprits, but they might be where to start the investigation.

I don’t think SIP should be off unless this is a T2 chip model requiring external boot access.

The other thing I’d like to ask is what do you do with the notice option when you receive it? Do you send the error report to Apple or just ignore it?

I found the solution that worked for me at reddit:

Deleting a "Sleep Wake Failure" diag file in \Library\Logs\DiagnosticReports that was closest in time to the start of the problem.

If that doesn't work there seem to be some other solutions posted here that might provide a solution or fix:

At least you are not alone with the problem... 😉

Hope you find one of the fixes there works for you and stops the annoying message.
