My OS is 10.15 on iMac 2017. I have been using Quicken since, well, Quicken for DOS. When I switched from Windows to Mac (Leopard), I switched to Quicken's Mac version (I think it was "Essentials"). My current version is Quicken 2017. Over the last few months, I have been getting warnings from Quicken about the approaching apocalypse. Well, today (4/20/20) it happened: Quicken for Mac 2017 seems unable to open my existing file unless -- if I read it correctly -- I agree to sign up for their "new and improved" subscription version. The screen shot below is the Quicken screen that opens now.
Fortunately, some while ago, I followed the advice of one of this forums' "elders," and purchased Checkbook Pro, and have kept it current. So, I'm okay, if you don't count annoyed. Mostly, my affection for Quicken is habit after decades of use. But I am not so hooked I will pay "rent" (subscribe) to use it.
If anyone here has figured out a workaround, I will be most grateful to hear it.
Thank you.

If you were warned that Quicken was switching to a subscription format, which a lot of providers are switching to, to get continued revenue on a yearly basis there's nothing you can do to bypass that short of finding an alternate application or ponying up the fee.

As I wrote, I do have an alternate application. When working toward upgrading to Catalina, and probably having to give up on Quicken, I purchased Checkbook Pro, and have grown to like it. However, as it turned out, the version of Quicken I have is compatible with Catalina. So, if I could continue using it, without having to pay rent, that'd be great.

I will say, the email "warnings" from Quicken have been decidedly snarky. I doubt they generated many sales.

I'll shift full-time to Checkbook Pro.

Thanks for your thought.

I've been using "checkbook" since 2008 and although the authors (Splasm Software) have upgraded the app numerous times they have never charged a fee. As for "Quicken", they (Intuit) have the worse customer service of any developer that I have run into over the many years of computing both in Windows and now on the Mac. That's just my personal opinion of course but also shared by others.

By the way, I use the standard checkbook program not the "Pro" version. I have no need for the Pro version.

chscag, I think it may have been you who suggested Checkbook to me when I expected Catalina to nix Quicken. If so, thank you again. I like it, and recently decided to keep both current, anticipating (from what I have been reading here and there) Intuit's pulling the plug, as they have now done.

"Quicken", they (Intuit) have the worse customer service

I am not surprised.

Quicken 2017 should still work in a limited way, all it means is that on the corresponding date for your Quicken product, these connected services will expire and be discontinued:

Online bill pay
Downloading and/or importing financial data
Downloading stock quotes, news headlines and other financial information into Quicken
Uploading portfolio information from Quicken to Quicken.com
Live Support
Software patches and updates.

After Quicken I tried Banktivity, SEE Finance and Moneyspire and have now settled with Moneyspire.

Quicken 2017 should still work in a limited way ...

You're right. The other day, I apparently clicked on something that annoyed the software, and got me into a never-ending loop. I uninstalled it, and set about to forget it.

Then, on a hunch, I went to Amazon, where I had purchased it a few years ago, and there discovered "Your Software Library" that keeps track of apps purchased and, at least in this instance, provides a link to download it again.

I re-installed it. I have never used Quicken's "online" features, so I would not miss those.

But I am pretty much settled into Checkbook Pro.
