I keep getting a random 'new mail' sound, yet no mail is arriving.

Not even junk mail, checked EVERY folder, it's really starting to get annoying.
Anyone else has this problem?

Do you get the sound even with the Mail app closed? I have a reason for asking.

It's so intermittent, it's really hard to tell, been testing with mail closed for a while, nothing yet, but who knows.
It can be twice a day or 10 times a day.

Mail will play a sound if it checks your mail and NO new mail is found as well. Perhaps that is what you are hearing. Reduce the frequency of automatic checks, and turn off the sound for no mail.

Although that sound is a lot lower than the incoming mail sound, that could very well be what the OP is hearing. Worth a try.

Yeah ive noticed it's lower!

How do I stop this sound?
I've only noticed a sound option for new incoming mail.

Go to Finder>Application>Mail.apps(right click)>show package contents>Contents>Resources>No Mail.aiff

Copy 'No Mail.aiff to desktop. Then Delete the 'No Mail.aiff' under Resources. If you changed your mind, you can put the copy of 'No Mail.aiff' from desktop back into Resources.

I believe if you uncheck Play Sounds for Other Mail Actions, all will stop. I want the sounds myself.

Wow, wait a minute, the no mail sound is different from the new mail sound, which is what I hear.

Infact I even went so far as to to change the mail sound to submarine, and it still played it at random.

Back to my old 2.2GHz C2D MB after selling my MBP and wondering what my next Mac will be :)
Do you mean the no mail sound is what you hear, or the new mail sound is what you hear?

Also, now that you've changed it to the submarine sound, is that what you hear now, or is it one of the above?

What do you have the main Alert sound set for in OSX System Preferences/Sounds?

Edit: I think 6String is reading my mind. I am wondering if something else is using that sound and why I asked the above.

uh after playing around with growl (I use a custom script to do a popup alert when mail arrives), disabling idle command in the mail account options I realised it was the idle command that was stopping mail alert sounds.

So, sounds play at random, then don't play, then play SOMETIMES, depending on your settings and so on.
What happened to 'it just works'?

EDIT- I spoke too soon, alert doesn't work again, disabled growl, worked.

Seriously...the ****?

I am also getting random new messages sound even though disabled

I am also getting occasional random Apple Mail “New messages sounds” (or something very similar) when my iMac is asleep, even though I have the new message sound disabled in Mail preferences. The volume is high, regardless of the current system volume setting.

The occurrences do not seem to coincide with new mail arriving.

The console log indicates the sound may be related to a wake ("reason EHC2”) caused by a USB device issuing a remote wakeup, although this could have been me clicking the trackpad shortly after I heard the sound and walked to the iMac! If that is the case, then there was nothing consistent in the console log for the times when I heard the sound.

The three possible sources listed are:

HubDevice (Port 1 of Hub at 0xfa000000)
BRCM2046 Hub (Port 1 of Hub at 0xfa100000)
Bluetooth USB Host COntroller (Port 1 of Hub at 0xfa110000)

These reports are immediately followed by a series of reports of errors for the BNBTrackpadDevice, starting with “Could not send DATA command via interrupt channel”, followed by several 0xe00002ca errors mostly related to attempted report-related actions.

Any suggestions on how to stop these sounds, other than turning the iMac off every night, would be welcomed!
