I was working on my 15" mac book pro running El Capitan when the screen turned completely red for a few seconds (just enough to take a snapshot of it) then it rebooted automatically showing a low resolution, gray login screen with horizontal lines running through it. When I tried to log in, the progress bar got stuck somewhere in the middle of loading and after some minutes the mac book just turned off. I tried again and again to restart it but I always get the gray login screen and can go no further. After that I tried running a file system check. Some files were modified so I ran it again until it said that the disk seemed to be ok. When trying to reboot though, the problem persisted. I also tried to boot in safe mode. The progress bar went all the way to the end, then loaded a flat, gray screen. Thanks for any advice,
Kai

Welcome to Mac-Forums..

How old is the MBP? Any liquid damage on it? The graphical glitches might be related to a failing GPU, but the issues starting up might be something else. Need more info about the MBP to help further..

It is a is a 15" Core i7. There is no liquid damage that i know of, but it has overheated a few time. It has been well taken care of but the battery was replaced a few days ago. The MBP is from 2011 but it had its firmware replaced 3 years ago due to a GPU issue related to this model. The fsck test returned no errors the last time I tried so it doesn't seem to be the SSD.

Assuming that the machine behaved well before the battery replacement, it might be connected. Who did the replacement work?

An Apple Certified Technician, but the battery is not original Apple. I still have the old one, though.

Since it is a 15” 2011 model, it’s more than likely the gpu, again. I had a late 2011, and had three motherboards replaced with the same issue. That repair/replacement program has been over since December of last year.

Sorry for the late reply... That sounds terrible. I thought I would try putting the old battery back in place and see if that changes anything. Is there anything I can do or tests I could run to find out whether it really is the GPU? I had the motherboard replaced once and checked on a second occasion (They didn't find anything even though I was occasionally seeing some graphics with artefacts) Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions.

I just viewed your screenshots and agree with Bob that your GPU has failed. There really are no tests except what you can view on the screen. However to make sure it is the GPU, attach an external monitor or TV set to the machine. If the same problems show up on the external monitor, then you will know for sure the GPU has failed again.

You might be able to find a repair facility that will do board repair for you and either re-solder the GPU or do a reflow. Those generally are the repairs that work - at least for awhile.
