Hi everyone,

I'm planning on repairing the bulging, leaking, and exploding capacitors on two first generation iMac G5 (EMC No. 1989) 17/1.8/512/80/SD/100-120V...
I have been reading up the process all the information I think I need I have found on this site: Apple iMac G5 Motherboards DIY Repairs Bad Caps Fix How to Guide | According to Jim

Has any of you done this successfully (or unsuccessfully!)?

Thank you for your time in reading, and hopefully I can get some feedback from someone who has actually done it!

Best Regards,

Tamara

repairing the bulging, leaking, and exploding capacitors

I performed this repair last week. 2 capacitors on the logic board were not only bulging, but leaking as well. It took about 3 hours to perform the repair. I replaced ALL the caps on the logic board. The caps on the power supply were also bulging. I decided to purchase a converted ATX power supply from a person out of Miami FL (via Ebay). I am at this moment using my repaired iMac G5 (The same as yours). BTW, I suggest you use a 60watt soldering iron.

Thank you for the tip Jkend46, I will be buying this soldering station: Soldering Station-BK3000LF... a bit more expensive than the others I saw but I think its worth the $10 difference.

Thanks again for your comment. Its nice to hear its doable!

Tamara

In case you didn't know...there are complete kits that are sold that contain all the caps you need for one low price. For example these places:

iMac G5 Capacitor Repair Kit
Apple iMac G5 Capacitors Kit Apple Motherboards Repair Parts Capacitors iMac G5 PSU MOB

...have all sorts of kits.

p.s. Lots of DIY procedures on the internet as well.:)
