The ethernet port on my iBook is broken. The little clip inside of it has broken off. So the cable keeps slipping out. Is this replaceable? Can they just pop the port out and put a new one in? Or is this really expensive? :( Thanks for any help anybody has to offer.

I think wedging toothpics on either side with the cable in, or tiny blobs of blue tac on either side of the cable before you plug it in may be your best bet.

Well that's just great :\ The cable stays in there fairly well... as long as nobody trips over it... I can tell where the tiny plastic tab at the front of the port broke, leaving the tab on the ethernet cable with nothing to grab onto. Maybe if I put some glue where the tab was, it'll give it something to latch onto...

Why not install an Airport card into your iBook & not worry about the ethernet port?

It has an Airport card. This iBook is "fully loaded" ;) But I don't have wifi. Having 3 computers is kinda useless without a router but, I don't really have the $40 for the CHEAPEST router in Wal-Mart even. :\

Port seems to be fine though, just doesn't "click" in anymore.

I see. Gotta get yourself a WiFi router soon...so you can get rid of the wires! I think that it's been 5 years or more since I last needed to use an ethernet port for networking purposes.;)

Yeah Macdude, when you can spare the change.... I think it'd be a good purchase.
The only time I have used an ethernet cable in I don't know how many yrs is to setup my wireless routers.
Spewin you're not in Oz as I'd send you my spare one.

Same with me...only used the ethernet port to setup a router or print server.

You would probably be able to get even cheaper used routers at a garage sale or at a thrift store. You should be able to pick up an older used WiFi router for $10-$15 bucks. Actually...I was just at a local electronics store...and they were selling a new router for $24 bucks.

One thing to be careful of...since you have some older Mac's in your collection...is make sure that the WiFi router you get is wireless "b" compatible. Most older routers you will come across will be wireless b/g compatible. I think some newer routers (that are wireless "n" compatible)...are only g/n...and no wireless "b".

Also be aware that if you wanted your iMac G3 to be capable of wireless networking...you need a special adapter for the airport card.

As far as how to install the router. Wait until you actually find a router & purchase it. If you don't get install instructions with it...then you can go online to most manufacturer websites & download the install instructions.

Hope this helps,

- Nick

I don't think that I need to worry about that. I need to get a router that splits ethernet cables as well. Because the G3 and G4 are staying plugged in. Neither have airport cards and I don't plan on buying and installing any. Although the G3 is all the way upstairs, and the Modem is downstairs. So an airport card would probably help me there. ;P As for the b/n connection, the iBook has airport extreme, so won't it connect to just about anything?

Most wireless routers you will find have 4+ ethernet ports.

Yes...but if I didn't mention that you needed a special adapter for your iMac G3 (if you wanted to make it WiFi compatible)...then when you purchased & tried to install an airport card in it...you would be SERIOUSLY confused why it didn't fit!;)

Also...yes if you're iBook has airport extreme (wireless "g")...then yes (at this point)...it should be able to connect to just about anything.
