When I reply to an email or forward an email the reply or forward icon all of a sudden does not appear next to the email that I have replied to or forwarded. This just started happening a few days ago. However, when I reply or forward an email from my iPhone or iPad, the icon appears on them, as well as the email on my desktop iMac!---but will not appear when I reply or forward from my iMac desktop. Apple cannot solve this and neither can my ISP.

Anyone have any clues??????

Hello, can you provide information about any of the products you are using? Maybe?

Not sure how I missed the fact that this wasn't resolved. Anyway, here's what I think will solve the problem:

1. Select a message that you want to reply to or forward. Double click the message so that it opens in a window.
2. There is a toolbar just above the message. If the reply and forward options are not there go to the View menu and choose "Customize toolbar". You can now add these options to the toolbar.

The reply and forward options are there. BUT when I reply to an email, or forward an email, the reply and/or forward arrows do not show up next to the email that I have replied to/or forwarded. Yet, when I really to that email on my iPhone, the arrow mysteriously appears next to the email on my desktop---but never when I reply/forward on my desktop.

That is the issue. I cannot see that I have replied to that email or forwarded it.

I see what you mean. Mail may not have a way to do that. If it does, I don't ever remember seeing it.

Mail has always done that. When you reply to an email, the reply arrow shows up next to the email you have replied to. Same as forwarding. Mail has always done that. I have emails on my desktop from earlier that shows the arrow as that email having been replied to. This just started happening a week ago. Mail has done this ever since I can remember. Online their are many many people with this same problem. Even Apple is perplexed.

I've been using Apple Mail for many years and have never seen what you're referring to. How about providing us with a screen shot? Also, were you using an Apple Mail add on? Add on scripts and other additions to Apple Mail are no longer allowed because of the implementation of SIP starting with El Capitan.

Have you looked in your Sent mail folder to confirm messages were sent, or that they were sent from the correct email address? I had an issue a few years ago where mail was deciding which outgoing server my mail was being sent from and, most of the time, it was not the server associated with each account. You can check your Outgoing Mail Server for each email account in Mail > Preferences > Accounts tab.

As I write this I am staring at 8 emails that I have responded to and each one shows a "reply" arrow next to it on the left. I will not send a screen shot as I do not wish my emails made public. I have also just returned from a friends house and he has emails showing a "replied" arrow as well. I am using El Capitan. All emails replied to are in my sent mail folder. Apple says that the reply arrow should be there but cannot figure out why they do not show up for me.

Yep, it's there for me as well. It's in a column that in the header is identified as a dot. I think the dot means "Labels" but I'm speculating on that. When I right click on the column header bar, the dropdown lists everything but that dot column, but "Labels" is greyed out. I'm also using "Classic" layout (Mail/Preferences/Viewing/Use Classic layout). If I uncheck that classic layout the column disappears. I'm using Mail 9.3, FWIW. OS X 10.11.6.

In Mail on a Mac, a blue dot next to an email indicates that that email is unread. A curved arrow indicates that the email has been replied to. A straight arrow indicates that the email has been forwarded. It has always been thus, according to Apple, and in all probability will be thus. My initial question/query, is why my reply and forward arrows are no longer shown when I reply to or forward an email.

I am using El Capitan (.6) as well and when I use Mail, I have it open full screen in its' own space. I have the View set up with my Mailboxes in the "sidebar", then the Email list, sorted by date. In this column, along the left, I have my reply/forward/attachment/blue dot icons showing, and the last section is where the email is displayed.

So is it fixed? You said in post # 12 "I am staring at 8 emails that I have responded to and each one shows a "reply" arrow next to it on the left." What is the date these emails are from? The last time I replied to an email was 8/26 and it has the reply icon with it. Is there a date that you are positive this started?

Can you compare, the last time that it happened that the icon did not show up, the email you received and the email you sent, can you confirm the "sent from" email address is the same as your "received" email address?

For example, you received an email at [email protected], but it sent from your [email protected], by accident. Maybe when you sent it, that server was busy, and it sent from a different "of your accounts" server?

This started about two weeks ago. Before that the reply/forward arrows appeared. I do not send myself emails. These are emails sent to me from various email addresses (friends, businesses, etc.) and reply to from my email address. Always sent from my account.

Bob, that does not show in my Mail setup when I uncheck the "Classic" view. All I see is the left sidebar with mailboxes, the center panel with the emails listed and the right panel for the preview of the selected email. No columns in the center at all. When I get an unread mail, a blue dot appears, but when I read it, the dot disappears and no answer/forward arrows appear at all. This phenomenon is one of the reasons I use "Classic" view, the arrows show up there.

I think you hit upon what the OP is seeing. I had completely forgotten about using "classic" mode since I haven't used it for several years. I don't particularly like classic mode as it takes up too much space with certain columns. A matter of choice. Perhaps the OP inadvertently changed his mode from classic to standard?

The arrows don't show up when I use Classic view--when I reply or forward. No arrows. Blue dot appears with new mail and disappears when mail is read. But no arrows when I reply or forward even in Classic view.

Jardine, that is strange. The arrows definitely are NOT there in standard view, but are in Classic (or should be). I've tested it several times and every time it works. I'm stumped. There isn't any setting I can think of to make it change, either. Had you done anything just before the problem started? Installed anything? Changed anything?
