Right, so I bought a Rev A Bondi Blue 233mhz iMac G3 on eBay. I already had a master 'd up hard disk from a broken 500mhz . I tested the disk on MacDrive 9 on my PC to verify it still worked, then took apart the computer. The left screw attaching the video cable snapped and I'm not sure that's the problem as I was still able to get video (All be it the wrong orientation) But after carefully unplugging all the cables and having to straighten out the CD-Rom connector pin due to it being warped by the heat (Some of the plastic was also warped, but that was minor) I had acess to the logic board.

So after meticulously taking apart the CD-Drive and its clip, I removed the original 4GB fireball drive. Just for clarity, I plugged the drive in and verified the contents. An install of 8.5.1 with some application. I copped the contents to the 120 GB (112 Visable with HFS + APT ) Western Digital WD1200 disk drive and slipped it back in. Everything was going swimmingly with the acceptation of the cd-drive springing out of its socket once or twice, leading to some lifting back and forth to push it back into place, and one time not plugging the front panel access plug in (Resulting in me having to turn on the computer with the keyboard.) , however with that comes the frustration.

First, it booted to the ubiquitous flashing question mark. This wasn't so bad, I still had the Green Mac OS 8.5 install disk. It would, if not for the fact that upon inserting the disk, restarting with C held down; I was presented with the open firmware screen after a few seconds of the disk drive spinning up on the flashing ? . Entrueiged, I entered the reset nvram and reset-all commands and held down the alt key.

Once again, flashing question mark folder for a few seconds as the cd-drive spun up, and then booted to Open firwmare 3.0 fb. I tried to boot to cd and I was presented with the error code.

load size 0 adler32 1 load size is too small

And when I tried to boot to HD It simply stuttered for a moment with the drive spinning up and gave an "Error No Bootable drives".

Frustrated, I took apart the computer again and this time returned the original fireball drive, made sure all the connections were secure, and that there was no bent pins or crossed wires.

I think you can guess that it still didn't work for some reason.

Can anyone tell me where I might have went wrong? I only damaged two pins on the CD-ROM reader that I straightened with some needle nose plyers, and the video screw witch I tried to get out with a small flat head screwdriver from a glasses kit to no avail.

I think I've just about run out of ideas. I plan on replacing the PRAM battery tomorrow, so other than that, is there any suggestions on what might have happened or how to fix this?

Just to be clear I have no fire wire drives of any kind, and this is the only mac I own currently.

G'day and welcome to the forums.

I am stunned you actually purchased a 233MHz original iMac. If you are talking about the original install CD from the 500MHz model it will not install. Those original system discs are extremely model specific. They came with operating system 8.1, and later 8.5. Also the slot loading optical drive may well be dead after all this time. This may help:-

Hmmm… are we getting spoofed here with comments such as "fireball drive" and "Rev A Bondi Blue 233mhz iMac G3" in the same paragraphs, and various other seemingly unrelated Mac and OS X comments…???

Then bent/"fixed" pins and missing screws etc…. I'd question if any PRAM battery is going to help at this point, unless I missed something… and why even bother???

And this is from an old Mac guy that likes to keep older Macs running…

Tray loading Bondi Blue drive to be clear, and no this was the Non machine specific 8.5 disk used for general powerpc usage.

I replaced the PRAM battery and logic board and it still occurred. I've come to the conclusion the video pin maaaay have more serious data interfacing issues.

Ill keep you all updated with my progress since I am going to have to head in deeper.

Okay so I'm leaning toward the CD-ROM drive being the problem. I completely stripped down the g3 and put it back together and still no dice! I'm going to order a new tray-loading optical drive and hope for the best.

Let me know if you think otherwise.

And please tell us you would never be brave enough to take a 233MHz G3 running Panther OS X.3 on the 'net?

Actually it would probably be quite safe if anything even still worked, as any hackers probably wouldn't even know what to do if they encountered some old PPC Mac and it's apps.

The problem with going on the net is not the computer processor power ...its the browsers ..I have trouble with Netscape in OS9. Im having issues with Camino in OS10.4...its all this crap about flash content has croaked these browsers..and yes you need a start up disc for that machine like OS8.1...I have one some place...it has the firmware on it the machine needs to boot.
