Right-click option to "send to ..." (esp. send to USB drive)

I've tried to add this as a service but haven't succeeded. Does anyone know of a script, add-on, applet or even a third-party file manager with the capability of right-clicking on a filename and sending the file to a USB thumb drive?

This is about the only thing I miss from Windows.

Thanks.

I don't understand, if you are in a Finder window, the USB thumb drive should be listed in the Sidebar, won't drag and drop works?

Yeah, I can do that. Here's why I don't: I'm an inartful user of my mouse. I often goof up a drag and drop maneuver by grabbing the wrong file, releasing too soon, dropping into the wrong place. I just really wish I could right-click and choose "send to ...".

I perfectly understand the “ oops “ I’ve released the mouse too soon scenario.

But following up Bob’s initial advice; why not copy and paste (Cmd +C/Cmd +V) then delete the source?

Okay, it’s one click extra, but it works and you have the option of immediately undoing the action if you make a mistake - Cmd + Z.

Just to add to the previous suggestions, have a look here:
To use Cut functionality on the Finder, do the following:

Step 1: Right click on the item that you wish to cut and select Copy

Step 2: Locate the destination where you’d like to move the item, right click, and hold the Option (⌥) key on your keyboard, and the Paste Item Here option will change to Move Item here. Click Move Item Here.

But this may be just what you're looking for at the same site:
If you still finding yourself missing Windows’ contextual cut command, you can use a third-party utility to add it to the Finder. One such utility is called XtraFinder, and it’s available as a free download. It features an option to add Windows-like cut and paste functionality to the Finder’s menu.

Thank you, guys, for your help. I'll probably just make do. It's the "send to ..." functionality of Windows I'm missing, which is particularly useful for copying a single file quickly to a USB thumb drive. I've attached a screen shot taken from an installation of Win10 running on my Mac under Parallels:

While it's helpful to know about it, I'm not sure the cut-and-paste with option key will speed things up much.

I was very tempted to try XtraFinder, but when I saw that I needed to disable system integrity to allow code injection, I balked. If there are High Sierra users out there who've used XtraFinder without problems, I'd like to hear. At any rate, I'm still not sure that XtraFinder would give me a "send to" (i.e., copy to) option with a list of destinations.

I just took a quick look and try using the suggested XtraFinder.app, and it sure seems to have the options you want once you get it setup.
PS: I didn't finish completing what you seem to want.

See options in screen shot below:

@Patrick,

That is very helpful. Thank you. I'm assuming that you don't think I need to worry about messing with the Finder code. One reason I'm a little skittish is that I recently lost a hard drive on my Mac Mini due to massive data corruption, and I'm looking for suspects (like third-party apps). Would you say that I can trust the XtraFinder dev(s) to be super careful in altering the Finder code?

That's one reason you should always keep a good working backup, but I'd doubt that the developer would be doing anything malicious intentionally.

Some of us Mac OS X users like to have our Macs work the way we want and not always restricted by the Apple command brigade, as if they haven't goofed up at times.

Have a look at some of the XtraFinder users comments or drop the developer a line with your questions or concerns.

PS: I haven't really tried it out myself but some parts look interesting.

I doubt that it's actually "messing with (or altering) the Finder code" but more likely, just piggy-backing on top or beside it and giving it some extra options.

Actually possibly something you could do yourself using Apple-script, but ready-made apps are usually easier unless you're good at scripting language. I'm NOT!!! :Blushing:

Yeah, I'm sure he's not being malicious, but sometimes well-intentioned tweaks or hacks have unforeseen consequences.

I agree, in principle, and I run a Linux machine that I routinely mess with until I break it. But I have that as an expectation and am used to getting myself out of jams with help from the huge, and hugely knowledgeable, Linux community. Plus, it's not a production machine.

That's a good link. Thanks. I can tell that XtraFinder isn't a fly-by-night app.

On that page you linked, there's an interesting comment about XtraFinder's features from a poster who says he's been using Apples since 1984:
GianMarco-Tavazzani said:
Then I do consider INDISPENSIBLE the 'Copy and move' contextual menu feature: once you start using it, you wonder what kind of miserable, blind and deaf developers are warming their chairs in Cuppertino instead to refresh the obsolete Finder!

But, back to your post:

I doubt that it's actually "messing with (or altering) the Finder code" but more likely, just piggy-backing on top or beside it and giving it some extra options.
Still, if "code injection" needs to be enabled, I figure there could be some nasty unforeseen consequences. I wouldn't worry if this weren't my primary work machine -- and if I hadn't recently been burned by a massive data loss (recoverable from online and local backups, but with a lot of hassle; the bigger the drive, the greater the hassle when data recovery inevitably becomes necessary).

Actually possibly something you could do yourself using Apple-script, but ready-made apps are usually easier unless you're good at scripting language. I'm NOT!!! :Blushing:
Ditto for me.
