iMac with Safari - How do I change the default email account that appears at the top right corner (green F in attached image).

That gmail account is not at (does not appear at) the app Mail>Account, although it is a gmail account that I use rarely ... and normally at Firefox (not Safari) precisely to avoid this ... but evidently I must have screwed up yesterday and opened it in Safari.

You are confusing the GMail/browser settings with your local Mac, they are unrelated.

There is not "default" email account per say. If you log into multiple GMail accounts in the same browser window, you can switch between them. They are, however, totally separate from each other.

I have 2 tabs open with 2 different GMail accounts so that I can use them at the same time as opposed to switching between them..

Have you, perhaps, made the Gmail website your "home" website? In Safari, under Settings, General, there is a place for Homepage. The easiest way to change it is to go to where you want it to open, then click on "Set to Current Page" and it will now open at that page when you start Safari.

Thanks to the two of you, I have sorted it out.

Now, on Safari, the homepage is my primary Gmail account, and on Firefox, the homepage is my secondary (rarely used) Gmail account.

I have printed that sentence onto a note scotch-taped to the desk immediately below the Mac's screen. Now all I need to remember is to read it.

Aging. Great sport.

If I understand how you now have everything working which to me is rather a confusing method I just thought I should mention that you should be able to set up your Gmail accounts in your mail client application Mail, and keep your browsing and your email separate unless you wanted it all grouped together as you seem to come and play have everything arranged.

Just a thought and in case you didn't know.
