My apologies if this is a duplicate question as I could not find any solution thus far. I use Macbook Pro purchased in 2015 and would like to know what determines a site to be called frequently visited and, more importantly, how to delete all these icons from safari as I found it replicating with the favourites and quite annoying to be listed with the latter. Thanks.

????

Sorry, but I'm not understanding your question or problem.

But maybe have a look at your Safari preferences and if needed, delete all data.
Or use the Reset Safari and select you options.

I'm just guessing that maybe close to what you're wanting to accomplish.

You determine what is called "frequently visited" by your actions, not a setting. If you visit a site 100 times a month and others in the dozens, but one only a couple of times, that last one will not qualify. To get one "knocked off" that status, you have to not go there.

toMACsh - well, I don't think I am the one to define what should be classified as frequently visited as this comes straight from Safari. How long should I 'not go' there before it will be taken off the list?

pm-r - my question is simply that a list would come up at the favourite page called frequently visited, and my intention is not to show it as the sites are overlapping with the favourites (which I truly visit frequently!) Would it be an optimal solution if I have to re-et all data each time I want to solve a small problem?

Thanks pm-r. Indeed I want to know both but it is the OS X that bothers me most often...

I'd suggest doing some searching for your particular OS's and your concerns. Especially if you're using any of Apple's latest OSs and their compatible apps, the options seem to change with each one.

"Frequently visited" is determined by the pages (sometimes can be different pages within the same site) that you ...

... Wait for it ...

...frequently visit.

Well, yes you are, by virtue of how often you visit each site. :)

That is 'cheating'.... :'( So the simple question is whether there is a simple way to turn it off... I am using OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 & Safari 8.0.3

The only way to see Top Sites is to either click on the icon in the upper left corner of the bookmarks bar, or to have it set as your homepage/new tabs open with choice. So don't do those.

You could just change browsers. The functions differ quite widely. Chrome for example does not have a frequently visited view.

I guess the Op knows one can stop all the site options showing in Safari's address bar when typing by pressing the tab button. Unless Apple removed that in Yosemite and unfortunately it doesn't stick and needs repeated presses.

Not sure if this was an option they were looking for or not.

Thanks Dennis. The thread contained a lot of useful ideas and discussions and I tried them all out. Checking off the show favourites from the safari setting did not work for me but dragging the frequently visited icons off the tab did; but afterwards, some other frequently visited sites popped up after I closed and re-opened safari. I had to keep deleting them until all were removed. With this said, I wonder what has to be the time spent or number of visits made to a particular set/page before it would be classified as frequently visited?

Further, I like the idea of removing the frequently visited sites from the favourite bar or tab but replacing this feature with a quick link where you are free to edit.
