In Catalina my Macbook Pro was able to have my Canon Pixma TR8560 printer scan documents using WiFi and the Scan Tab/Open Scanner option in System Preferences/Printers and Scanners. Ever since I upgraded to MacOS Big Sur 11.4 on my new 2020 iMac the Print option functions well using a WiFi connection but the scan option does not. The error message I get is “Could not connect to scanner”. Any thoughts on what could be the issue.

Are you still using the 2010 MBP?

It could be a driver issue. Have you checked the Canon site to see if there are updated drivers for the TR8560? My Canon TR8520 supposedly can Print, Scan, and Copy when on WiFi. I have not tried scanning when on WiFi since I have nothing to scan. I too am using Big Sur 11.4.

I just checked the Canon site and they list no new drivers or anything at all for the 8560. However, their setup instructions clearly show it should work with WiFi. The problem is the info is outdated and from 2017, long before Big Sur.

You may have to contact Canon support and ask.

I don't have anything to scan either, but I can still access my Epson XP-620 Small in one scanner over Wi-Fi.

I checked the Canon site and downloaded the driver software again and went through the setup but still no joy re scanning. I did note that there is a firmware update for the printer that says it is for compatibility with Big Sur so will install that to see if it corrects the problem.

I downloaded the firmware update and found that it was the same version that was already installed in the printer. So no luck there. I then searched for a solution in various printer forums and one solution suggested that had worked for some included resetting the printing system, resetting NVRAM and then re-adding my printer. Unfortunately this failed to solve my problem. I then obtained a USB printer cable and found that scanning worked when the computer was directly connected to the printer. This finding pointed to a network issue as the cause. Finally one user suggested that disabling IPV6 in the printer could be the answer and voila this worked. Tested and confirmed using my better half‘s macbook pro and my iMac. Scanning is now operational again.

Great bit of troubleshooting! Thanks for posting back the solution.
