I'm selling my Mac and my buyer wants to see the welcome screen when they hit the power button for the first time. My question: how do I make this happen AFTER I have installed the applications/iLife disc. When I bought my Mac for the first time, I went through the welcome screen and Ilife was sitting there waiting for me. Now, I have re-installed OSX 10.6 and I have to install Ilife after I have proceeded through the welcome screen. This sucks because I want my buyer to be able go through the welcome screen and have everything ready for them including Ilife.

Thanks!

Just let them do the iLife install. Once you re-install the OS and it reboots you can COMMAND-Q at the setup screen without completing and the machine will shut down and the Welcome will play again upon startup. Once the setup is complete and the desktop is logged into, I do not know of a way to get the Welcome to play again on startup. It is on the computer, but finding it and playing it manually isn't the same.

I haven't done it in a while, but you used to be able to delete the /private/var/db/.AppleSetupDone file and the system would run the welcome video again, and prompt the user to create a new Administrator account. Might be worth trying.

I entertained that as an option, but it would be nice to be able to give them a computer that appears to be new from the store. (also makes it an easier sell) Is there anyway to trigger the welcome screen after installing the applications disk?

I'm selling this to someone that may find installing other programs after purchase to be a pain, and this would support their initial idea of "I should just spend the extra money on a new one."

I realize this question is overly-anal, but there should be a technical way around this. If they sell them new with this set-up, we should be able to re-create it no?

Thanks!

I totally understand the need, I am just not sure how to do it. The instruction given by EvenStranger might be worth a try and I would love to see the outcome. Maybe both of us can get educated here. :D

Will that create another user account? I have to go through the welcome screen no matter what to get to the point in which I can install the applications DVD. It seems like going through this step would create another user account.

Also, I'm not sure what the referenced file name is or where it's located. I'm not as Mac savvy as I could be.

Cool! Next question: After I get to this point, are there any commands to power down the computer? You know what I'm saying? If I turn on the computer and the fancy welcome screen starts rolling then do I just hold the power button to power down?

If you want to test that it does indeed work, just login as though you were your buyer. When you've tested to your satisfaction, run through the steps again - but this time, don't boot the computer back up. Just pack it and get it ready for shipping.

Last question: Have you ever done this on OSX 10.6. yourself? I'm a little nervous because running "terminal commands" is above my head and the authour states that "you can screw things up." I assume if you do exactly what he says everything will be ok, but... Thanks

Yes, I have. It was extremely straightforward.

Now, don't go typing random commands in the terminal as you could certainly cause problems. But if you're following a "script" like this, it's not a big deal at all.
