does it make a difference if you use server ram as opposed to regular ram for the mac pro 1.1?

The Mac Pro 1.1 takes ECC memory. Yes it makes a difference. ECC is error correcting which makes it more expensive. The premise is that server memory needs to be very accurate so sloppy errors allowed! Anyway, bottom line it will pitch a fit and not boot if the correct memory is not installed.

Unless there is someone with a magic fix - which I highly doubt, your stuck with 667 DDR2 ECC FB-DIMM memory that is specific for the Mac Pro 1.1.

I understand totally. I have two servers and many is the time I wished I could have purchased the much cheaper un-buffered, non-EEC memory when I added ram. No such luck.

Also the gap in the pins on the chip is often off centre in EEC RAM, meaning you cannot even install non EEC RAM in the slots

Want to speed up your macintosh ram and no this isn't a advertisement you can do this simply by looking up the mac 2006/2007 firmware tool on google this will convert your macintosh pro 1.1 into a mac pro 2.1 and the reason this works is the chipset in both of these models is the same and so is the main board you can easy convert the board over which allows you to use faster ram and even larger processors
