Perhaps I'm old fashioned but I want my financial information on my desktop where I know it's available when I need it. I am running three businesses and with periodic internet outages, I don't consider QB online an option and their latest gambit to steer everyone in that direction is outrageous. I am using QB 19 but my desktop just upgraded to Sonoma 14 and now QB won't open. As soon as I hit login and it begins to open, it quits. QB help tech informs me that my QB 19 won't run on Sonoma. What they wouldn't tell me is if QB 22 will run on Sonoma. I can purchase that program on disk but hesitate to spend the two hundred only to find that it won't work either.

This post seems to indicate that QB 21 is compatible with Sonoma once fully updated.

You will get a lot of good answers from other QB users on that forum.

Intuit definitely has been pushing everyone toward their online product since it allows for better monetization. Your $200/year is a one time thing, but if they can hook you in for $15/month for basic or $45/month that's a good revenue stream. All companies that make standalone applications are going down this route.

This allows them to then jack up the price to $20/month, and $25/month and so on with the promise of new functionality always rolling in.

Thank you for the link! Our regular internet outages alone preclude me going online with the bookkeeping and the SOB's want $1830 a year for the desktop subscription; that's highway robbery!

I had a compatibility problem with QuickBooks desktop after a previous OS update some years back, so I called Intuit to see if QB 2019 desktop was compatible with Sonoma before upgrading the OS. They said it was not and tried to steer me to the online subscription version. I wanted the desktop version, but they told me it was also subscription based and over $650.00/year, which is just ridiculous. Clearly they did not want me buying the desktop version. I had an older computer with 2019 on it, so I thought I could use that if it didn't work. I just updated the Mac OS to Sonoma 14.3 on my Mac Mini, and QuickBooks 2019 for desktop works just fine. Every time I deal with Intuit I feel like I'm being robbed.

My workaround was to fire up an older 2013 iMac running High Sierra that was parked in a corner of a back office and install the 2019, along with the backup of my files. Means having two machines on my desktop but it works.

I think that's a practical solution. You will be one of many users who run a second device to maintain a suddenly incompatible application.
I do warn people to check that "core" applications will work with new macOS though, bearing in mind that although perhaps desireable macOS upgrades are not compulsory.

For the last 40 years I have always waited to upgrade for at least a year after the update appeared to be reasonably certain that the bugs had been worked out. I missed the "automatic" upgrade setting with this new machine; it did it on its own without my knowledge, and I was screwed.

Right now I am running Quickbooks 2020 on Sonoma 14.3.1 which is a stand-a-lone version. In the past updates to Mac OS has forced me to upgrade my Quickbooks. I know some day I will face keeping an older mac running an older version of OS to keep the app on. I just can't justify paying for the online version. I started out using Quickbooks when we had a farm business, my husbands electrical work, his working for GM, my teaching, and my freelance video work. Now we are retired and don't have near the records to track and just need to balance our checkbooks.

I am in a similar situation, farm, investment properties, consulting business, employees. Although I've been "retired" for 10 years now, except for the employee part I still have income from all three businesses to track. I'm hoping that if I die when I ought to the current setup will see me through to the end.... :)

I get it, I'm glad you have a workaround. Default settings can be a PITA.

...I want my financial information on my desktop where I know it's available when I need it.

There is a list of all of the available Macintosh accounting programs here:

The site is organized so that computer-resident and cloud-based apps are listed separately.

If you want an alternative to Quickbooks, you might especially want to check out MoneyWorks.
