I installed Callnote to record Skype sessions but I found that it was interfering with the system audio so I uninstalled it using AppCleaner. However, I still have a remnant of Callnote in the input and output device windows of Sound System Preferences, and it is interfering with the audio selection of sources in that it is usually selected when the default of the internal mic and speaker should be selected: how do I get rid of it?

Also (in the spirit of BOGOF - buy one get one free), it is irritating that my Startup at logon of Safari starts it up but doesn't show a window - I always have to click on the Safari icon in the Dock. This started to happen with Yosemite, I think; before that a window automatically appeared. I presume it doesn't show because "Hide Safari" is an unalterable permanent selection in the Safari drop down menu, but why is this so when no other application has this permanently selected?

Open System Preferences and find the remand of Callnote. Right-click on the remand and see if remove/delete is one of the options. When you ran the installer did an uninstaller program come with it? That is the easiest way to remove some programs.

As far as Safari goes it sounds like there is a window that is minimized when Safari is closed. Before you shut down Safari go to the Windows menu and see if there is a window title with a dit by it. If so select one to open it then make sure that window is closed. Do that for each minimized window.

Look in System > Library > Extensions, is it listed? If so move to trash and restart. After restart test it out, if all is ok, you are all set.

Thanks - your suggestion led me to get rid of Callnote in the input and output device windows of Sound System Preferences, but it wasn't in System > Library > Extensions but was in Library > Extensions. It was there as Callnote.kext; I deleted it and restarted and it did not reappear in the Sound preferences. You gave me the idea to look in extension folders elsewhere when I didn't find it in your suggested location, but I had to look manually since neither Spotlight nor Alfred found Callnote.kext, though they both found the .pkg file. (By the way, this is something I don't get about Spotlight: in Finder I asked it to search for Callnote in Macintosh HD and all it came back with was the .pkg file; and it did the same when I invoked Spotlight in the menu bar - which gave me no option of where to search so I suppose it defaults to Macintosh HD. Before I'd done this I already new about the location of Callnote.kext in Library > Extensions. So when Spotlight failed to find Callnote in Library > Extensions by starting with Macintosh HD, I got it to search starting with Library instead of Macintosh HD: then it found Callnote.kext. I suppose both Spotlight and Alfred don't search some places unless specifically directed, but I looked at preferences for them both and couldn't figure out how to alter them to get them to search absolutely everywhere.)

Not sure about Alfred but when Spotlight was introduced it did not search invisible files, hidden files, or System files. I believe that is still true.

It could find files in the main Library folder (at the root of the hard drive) because that folder is not hidden. It did not search the Library folder inside your user folder because that Library folder is hidden by default. I believe it will search your Library if you "unhide" it first.

I have solved my problem with Callnote though not by your suggested method - right clicking gives nothing. See below. However, my Safari problem has been partially solved.
The mystery of the unselectable "Hide Safari" lies in having the Safari window maximised or not. When maximised "Hide Safari" is unselectable; when unmaximised "Hide Safari" then becomes selectable. However, restarting after shutting Safari with an unmaximised window - no minimised either - made no difference. Safari automatically starts (via logon option) but doesn't automatically give a window - I had to click on Safari in the Dock, as usual. In Safari general preferences you can specify which window should appear, and I've never altered it from "new window" and "Top sites" for many years; and until, I think, Yosemite, it always did just that. However, I have recently learnt about a general option in System Preferences - Close window when quitting an app - that seems to imply that a window open at Safari shutdown will be restored if the option is unchecked, but it doesn't imply anything about the initial opening of a window. Anyway, I tried this option checked and unchecked and it doesn't give an initial window on restart.

How about when you restart, do you leave a Safari window open? And the Restart text box opens and, "Reopen windows when logging back in", is it checked or un checked?

I tried the Restart box and the Preferences box I referred to earlier and they do the same thing: give a window and open the last webpages before close down. However, I think that the Preferences option (unchecked) is more potent in that it seems to be executed quite quickly, since Safari comes up much quicker than I've been used to - I usually wait for about 10 seconds for the dot to appear under the bouncing icon of Safari. Even though Safari is automatically showing a window at initiation, I'm having to set/unset flags I hadn't bothered with before, and it's still not behaving as it used to: i.e. show a window with Top Sites in the current Space.
