Greetings, all.
I have a question that i cannot find an answer to readily.
I was given an early 2015 MacBook Air (A1466 -EMC 2925) to either repair or harvest - as it turned out, the logic board was toast, so
I declared it too expensive to repair. I would like to harvest the SSD out of this unit and install it into an external enclosure.
However, the connectivity form factor is unusual, and I suspect propriety of some sorts (thanks, Apple!).
Does anyone in the Forums group know of the particular classification for that model (such as a PCI-E that is M.2 NVME, which this is not)?
So far I know that specs include that it is PCI-E (not SATA) and that it is Rev. 3, but the connection form factor is beguiling, and so far, evasive.
I have attached a couple of quick photos to show you its pin configuration.

Any thoughts would be appreciated - many thanks for reading.
Best regards,
DLC

It is indeed a PCIe interface and you could use the OWC Envoy to make it an external drive.

Yes, an enclosure for the Apple proprietary PCIe blade type SSD is expensive. And as far as we know, only OWC sells that type of enclosure.

@OP: If I were you, I would keep the SSD for a future project that you may need it for. Buying an enclosure for it is not economically feasible.

Wow - that OWC enclosure is certainly pricey at $88.00 and that is on sale no less

I don't now how large the SSD of the 2015 MacBook Air is, but a typical 500GB external SSD is less than the $88.- OWC wants for just the enclosure.

Not sure how this helps in using a SSD blade from a Macbook Air since that was the original question at hand.

If no-one else is selling this type of enclosure, then OWC can charge what they want. If it's too pricey, people won't buy it.

My point was simply that the enclosure is more expensive than a complete 500GB external SSD so it doesn't seem to make much sense to buy it to re-purpose the SSD which is what the OP was asking about.
Maybe just sell the SSD on eBay....

Hi,
Thanks to all who chimed in on my query. I had discovered the Envoy enclosure during my research, and came to the same conclusion as most everybody, that OWC's price was too salty to consider its purchase feasible. I'll keep the stick, maybe use as a unit-specific backup.
What I was hoping for (maybe dreaming of is a better way to put it), that the industry had a more specific form factor designation (beyond "Apple propriety") for this style of connection, then troll the Internet/Amazon for a 3rd party solution with a less egregious price.
Thank you again,
