I have noticed that some games like spider solitaire show storage of say 400 meg when the app is less than 100 meg. I have deleted the app and reinstalled to prove the size. Why is the size in increasing so much. When space is so limited this presents a real problem. What is happening?

Because when downloads it as a .dmg file and it is compressed, and when you expand by double clicking it goes to the full size. If your space is so limited you may well need a larger hard drive. Should you supply your Mac model and operating system, maybe could recommend an external hard drive, cloning your hard drive to it, boot from that and run the game?

I notice that you have posted this under iOS and Apps - so I presume that your storage problems are with an iPhone or iPad?

Everything Harry said applies two-fold to iDevices which have a lot less storage capacity.

As Harry rightfully says and you also noted, the App itself is small beer; but once you start to play, all the moves & changes you make are stored so that you can stop/continue the game; keep scores and all the other apparatus that goes with the game.

There is no way on an iDevice to remove the additional baggage other than by deleting/reinstalling the App and starting over.

Can you tell us what device, iOS version and game version you are using? Also, are you using the free app version or the paid app version, and from what vendor?

I am using the MobilityWare version 3.2.1 of Spider Solitaire on my iPhone 6 running iOS 10.2.1 which installs @ 37.3 MB, Documents & Data is 6.9 MB, and is using 44.2 MB for the paid version of the app. I also have it installed on my iPad.

The game might have downloaded additional content like new card tiles and also might have saved games stored. A lot of games do that now to reduce the size of the download from the App Store (in some cases to fit within the App Store limits) whereby they create the shell of the app an put it on the Store. Once you download the app, the first thing it does is to download arbitrary amounts of game data that might be quite large depending on the game. I've seen games which are a 50MB download from the store that will then download 750MB of game data and so on..
