So after months of saving I finally ordered a Mac Studio and a Studio Display back on 16th May to replace my aged and slow iMac.

May 30th the Mac Studio arrived. However not having a spare thunderbolt or HDMI monitor, I left it unopened until the Studio Display arrived. That didn't arrive until 26th July.

On the day the monitor arrived I set-up the Mac Studio and Studio Display. Later that day a message popped up saying that there was a Firmware update for the Display. I installed it but it got caught in an endless loop of rebooting, installing, display support.apple.com/display/restore before repeating the process. After watching several reboots I disconnected the Display, reconnected it. Same thing. Then in all honesty I'm not sure what happened as I just left it looping and walked out the room for an hour. At the point I walked back in suddenly the screen came to life again and was fine.

10 days later there was another Firmware update. Again I installed it, again it looped but then this time it suddenly just stuck on displaying support.apple.com/display/reset. Even turning the power off for several minutes wouldn't make it display anything else. I got in contact with Apple who said to bring it into a Genius which I did the following day. The Genius said that it would need a new logic board but that as it was so new, I was better off getting a refund and re-ordering it.

Trouble is that Apple can't deliver a replacement for a month. However, whilst waiting for the refund to clear in my account, I noticed that my local Curry's (electrical retailer) could deliver a Studio Display to me the next day. So I broke out the credit card and ordered it. It arrived a couple of hours ago.

So imagine my dismay and horror that it instantly detected a Firmware update was available, I installed it and yet again it was caught in an endless loop of rebooting!!

In the end I was able to rescue it and get it working again by taking out all the USB/Thunderbolt cables from the monitor with the exception of the one going to the Mac Studio. I think this is perhaps what I did on the last one as well but I can't remember for sure as I tried dozens of things.

So whilst I have a working Studio Display, it's so far behaving exactly like the first one which then completely died and needed a new Logic board 10 days later. This doesn't exactly make me feel confident!

I know there have been a whole host of Firmware issues with the Display like those being told to try again in an hour, the update server being switched off etc but these don't seem the same as the issues I've been encountering.

For those out there who have a Studio Display and have applied the firmware updates without issue, how many reboots did the display do when applying the firmware? Also do you have anything else plugged into the display and if so what?

For those who have had similar problems with the Studio Display, what have you found, if anything, resolved it and has the problem come back?

I don't have one myself so I'm speaking a bit out of my rear, but quite frankly I would avoid these like the plague for now. Apple's first-gen products frequently are problematic and it's pretty typical for them to take a couple generations to iron out the bugs. There are exceptions of course (the first-gen M1 MBA I have is fantastic!), but I think the Studio Display is clearly not one of those exceptions.

It looks like a fair bit of reading here if you haven't done so already. But I don't know how many actual users there are with those machines out there.

I'm sorry to hear you are having problems with such an expensive Mac and display.
