Hi,

I carry my macbook around in my backpack a lot. But, I've had to stop because it seems that every once in a while the machine will sense a movement and assume that I want it to wake up. Thus, walking down the street there is a lot of waking up and going to sleep - not good if you have the fans covered!

Is there a way to turn this feature off? I've had a look at most of the System Preferences and can't seem to find anything that relates to this. I might just be missing it.

Any help greatfully received!

Cheers,

The SMS can be disabled through the Terminal, but it isn't recommended.

If the problem is as you say, then I would suggest simply shutting the computer down when you are carrying it in your bag.

(I know you don't really ever need to shut down a Mac and that it can be an inconvenience, but for your situation it would be the lesser of two evils)

the sudden motion sensor doesnt work that way i believe. Its only supposed to "park" the HD head in case of a fall, not turn the laptop on.

id just shut it off like D3 says, much easier, and no worries. My MB did this a few times while in my bag, it turned out to be where it was placed in the backpack, something must have been getting pushed (like a key or something)

Yeah, the SMS does not wake the computer; it's only active when the computer is awake.

Perhaps you're jostling the notebook enough to cause it to pop open. If so, I'd suggest you find some kind of sleeve to hold it shut (and provide some padding.)

I had this problem and took my computer into the Apple store; they had to send it away, but it did get fixed. Took about 7 days.

technologist & kgeier82 explained the feature correctly. It only protects the hard drive in case of sudden movement (ex. a drop)

It would be a awful feature for them to include if it turned on the computer every time it moved. Who would want that?

Are you sure you're not carrying around any Bluetooth mice or phones that might be paired? Those can wake the machine from sleep. I've never heard of the SMS feature doing that.
