Hello all
It looks like there's more than a few postings about Monterey 12.01 and time machine so I'm not sure if I just wait for a few version upgrades before attempting to configure it again or look into an alternate software backup solution.
I have a 2018 Mac Air Retina recently upgraded to Monterey and a 2019 Mac Pro still on Big Sur.
Both devices previously had time machine backing up to the same share on my Synology NAS DS1019+
And past I've run into issues with Mac OS upgrades that force me to archive the old file and start a new file for time machine but this is the first time I've run into an issue where that solution does not work. There is not a lot of apps on MacAir and the original OS was Catalina not Mohave.
I even created a new Mac user profile after manually backing up the old thinking that maybe there was just too much history in the old profile causing an unknown issue but.. Time machine still doesn't work with a new profile though.
Thanks in advance Any ideas?

The big sir Mac pro still works fine backing up to the

The symptom I'm seeing at this point after recreating a new user profile is that it attempts to run the backup and then quits out with an error and will continue creating sparse bundle files at every attempt it makes to run it again. PXL_20211110_190532275.jpg

Monterey has issues with Time Machine backups. There's another thread about it, but in my case, I can get a backup to successfully complete only while in Safe Mode. Apple reportedly is looking into it.

Could this have something to do with Apple's T2 chip?

Nope. I have an M1 MacBook Air, and the Apple Silicon Macs don't have a T2 chip.

I have a Synology NAS and running Monterey on my Mac Mini and the Time Machine backups are working without any issues.

I also updated to the latest DSM this morning and the backups are running right now without any issues.

Yeah, whatever the problem is affects only certain Macs. It backs up fine on my 2019 iMac to the same Time Capsule that the MBA is failing on.

Thanks all, I'm not sure what changed but I tried running the backup a day or so later on the Monterey MacAir one final time and it ran successfully this time in about 5 hours. I'm not sure what changed if anything but it was a bit of a surprise to see it completed without fail.

FYI macOS 12.1 has fixed the TIme Capsule problem here on my MacBook Air. Give it a whirl to see if this resolves your issue.
