I would like to transcribe a recorded voice memo on my iPhone and/or MBP into text. When I searched on the feasibility, I got some recommendation about clicking Edit-Transcribe but I was unable to locate it from either of the device. It is an iPhone 14 Pro Max running on iOS 16.5 and a MBP running on Ventura 13.2.1. Can anyone help please? Thanks!

I have been using Dictanote and its Google Chrome extension Voice In as dictation (speech to text) software that seems to be able to record almost any voice and produce text in its place which I cannot see why it would not work for what you want to do.

Unfortunately, it's not free but it is what I would consider certainly very reasonable and it is way more accurate than Apple's included Dictation software, at least that's the way it is on my older iMac.

You might be able to see what is involved here:

Yes, there are plenty of third-party apps that can transcribe and I am just wondering why Apple does not produce any such functionality. Translating an audio message into text will only occur in the upcoming iOS upgrade in Fall. Besides, transcribing a voice memo is not the same as speech-to-text in my view. Just found it a little bit frustrating, that's all.

Thank you for the suggestion.

If you play the Voice recording on your iPhone and use the Voice to Text option on your Mac, wouldn't that achieve the same results?

Yes I tried and it did the job albeit not perfect. I also tried it with Google Translate which has the transcribe option. It seemed a bit better.

Apple has provided just such a feature for years now and I don't see why you should think of the English description as being different to what you think it should be and really, "transcribing a voice memo is not the same as speech-to-text in my view", how come???, and you could probably reduce your frustration with a quick search on the web and maybe even try using this one and have a quick read at some of the hits for methods for doing so:

Or did I really misunderstand what you were wanting to do??? Sorry if I did.

I'm not trying to be a smart-ass, but if the translation from voice to text is not close as you wanted to be, maybe it's time to just to pay someone who does such work for their transformation services like a court reporter or some such.

Just a thought, especially if the translation is that critical.

I've been using MacWhisper to do audio transcription - YMMV.
