Hi, I downloaded the Google app onto my iPhone 13, and toggled on Google translate in Settings, but when I highlight a text in the newspaper Le Monde, Google doesn't offer me a translation. Instead, I get the iPhone's translator which is a little more cumbersome. It seems to me. Any suggestions anybody?

I do have the Google Translate stand alone app on my iPhone 13 but I only use it for short passages of text. I copy the text I want and paste it into the Text box of Google Translate.

When it comes to reading whole pages I use my laptop and the Google Translate extension on my web browser.

I don't use ani iDevice or iPhone with any needed translation, but did you check out Google's Google Translate Help site in case they may have some suggestions for you that hopefully will actually work:

Hopefully you can find something useful there.

EDIT: you may need to read through some of the hits with this Google Search as well:

I know I could use the dedicated Google translate app, as well as the Google app, after copying the text and pasting, but I thought that with the iPhone 13 I should be able to see the translation as I do on my MacBook Air when I go to the Le Monde site with Google Chrome, highlight the text and click on the icon that appears.
Just using my iPhone is not working for me. I highlight text, click on 'traduire', then the phone shows that it's working on 'downloading languages', but gets stuck on 94%! But why 'downloading languages'? I've already done that. I must be doing something wrong otherwise it wouldn't be working to download anything and get stuck on 94%.

Has it ever worked and done the translation previously and if so can you think of anything you might have added or changed since you last used it successfully and have you shut down the iPhone and rebooted it.

If it never worked properly I'm afraid I don't know other than search through some of the suggestions those Google search hits and suggestions might provide. 😉

I know that the Google translate app or in fact, just the plain Google app will work, I just thought that the iPhone would have its own seamless and efficient process! I'm thinking in fact that part of the problem stems from the Le Monde app, which either wants you to read in French or in English but which can't help you to translate particular sentences. I've deleted the Le Monde app, and I'm just using Google to get Le Monde up, then you simply highlight text and tap the translate button at the bottom of the screen.
