Hi, I had an account with whatsapp in the past and somehow managed to get the account by using my fliphone. After a long time of not using the account I removed it from my iMac. Now I need to get it back so I can troubleshoot a program on another computer with someone in PRC. The tech and the translator only use whatsapp.

Does anyone know of how to hook up to Whatsapp without a means of scanning or using a QR code?

I don't but it seems that these people know how:

And if that doesn't work and you need more help, try these Google search hits:

"Previously, the WhatsApp mobile app was required to authenticate an account used on another device, such as a computer, and used a QR code to link a user account to a web browser or desktop app. While that initial link is still required, the connected phone that has the WhatsApp app on it is no longer required once the link has been made."

So, it seems that you still need a phone to create a link to your Mac.

Facebook messenger is about the only popular messaging app I know that can be used without a mobile phone app to verify the desktop app.

WhatsApp was and is primarily a mobile application. Even the desktop apps have to be authenticated by the mobile app.

Thanks! I really appreciate the answers. Looks like I'm outta luck. I did sign in without the QR code maybe a year and a half ago but they must have closed that loophole.

I do have an iPad which of course can read the QR code. I wonder if that might be doable? It is not hooked up to the cell network

The QR code is read by WhatsApp to authenticate the app showing the QR code. You can't just randomly read the QR code on another app/device and expect it to do anything.

Anyway, the bottom line is that if you want to use WhatsApp, you need a mobile phone. If you don't have any smartphone at all, then you're just out of choices.

I am sure that I read that whatever device is used to authorize one's login and/or QR code, even if just for the initial setup, it must be connected to and using some Network for it to work.

It seems like the tech and the translator need to change the application they use, and why do they limit themselves so much???

Gone are the days when we were required to use our credit card as verification of ID and I cant say I'm sorry about that. I would like to see Authenticator apps used more though. We still get stuck on OTP's via SMS from time to time. Useless if you're o/seas with a local SIM.
QR codes are becoming more and more of a thing here in Indonesia. SIM card ownership is so regulated it's like a personal ID in itself. Last week my wife found she had forgotten her debit card when she went to pay at the supermarket checkout. No problem said the girl, just open your bank app, login and scan the QR code on the bill slip, sure enough the amount was debited from her account. It's Indonesia's equivalent of Tap an Pay or Pay Wave.
