Hello friends, when I bought my Mac 4 years ago, the retailer installed McAfee antivirus software. However, it's long been out of date, so I wish to delete it. How do I find on my Mac, a list of software programmes? I'm sorry, I still don't understand the Apple way of doing stuff on the computer. In the last 2 weeks, McAfee has been interfering with my being able to logon to the SunSavers website, to enter daily numbers for raffles. McAfee pops up with the message Site is blocked, or something similar. Can you please help?

The first thing to do is to go to the Applications folder and McAfee there, assuming it's a folder as well and check to see if you can find the uninstaller there. If you do, then run that to cleanly uninstall McAfee.

If you can't find that folder or uninstaller, then try the following.

  • Open Finder
  • Hit SHIFT+CMD+g
  • Enter the path /usr/local/McAfee and hit return
  • Check for the existence of file called uninstallMSC. If it exists, double-click on it and it should ask you for your admin password and do the same uninstallation work as the uninstaller.

Thank you Ashwin for your reply. I shall attempt to use your instructions. I appreciate your help, Frank.

I'm very sorry Ashwin. I did attempt to use both of your suggestions, and I've failed. With the first instructions, I couldn't find uninstaller.

With the second instruction, after entering the path, and entering return, nothing happened. Therefore, I did not see uninstall MSC. Anyway, how do I find my admin password? I apologise for being stupid, I simply don't have the common sense to be friends with my Mac.

Sorry, Frank.

Well shucks, that would've been too easy if it just worked. 😃

Can you take a screenshot of your Applications folder (CMD+SHIFT+5, and select the appropriate window) to see what we see. Perhaps it's called something else.

The other solution is to grab a copy of the version of McAfee you are currently running and install it again with the hope that it will give you the uninstaller and then you would use that to uninstall it.

Hello Ashwin,
I apologise for my late reply. My wife and I have been busy with grandchildren. Plus I continue to deal with my health issues.

Therefore I haven't gone back to try your suggestions again. I've got around putting the code numbers into Sun Savers, using my mobile phone. I see other members have added their replies. I haven't read them yet. I Do want to see the back of the MacAfee software.

Thank you, Frank.
