My friend gave me his 2013 Macbook Pro to fix and when I turn it on, a file with a question mark comes up. So, I pushed command+R to try and reinstall OSX. I am unable to see the SSD when I try to install OSX. So, I tried reformatting the SSD, and I can see the 512 GB SSD when I try to format the drive. However, when I try to format it, I get a message saying, "Unable to write the last block of the device." Does this mean that the SSD is bad? I have tried removing it and placing it back in. I just wanted to get some opinions first before I tell my friend he either needs a used $200 SSD or a new $500 one.

Do you have a macOS bootable USB installer? Or another drive, you can use to start the MBP with? If you start up from a different drive, you will be able to see if Disk Utility will see the drive, repair the drive, and format the drive.
