Well, there's buying it unlocked from Apple. That's the only free method that will actually work that I know of.
Most carriers will unlock an iPhone under contract for a small fee ($50 or less) after a period in good standing ... for us up here in Canada, that's three months (90 days). That is a "carrier unlock" and will be permanent. I've heard of a number of services that cost much more and don't "really" unlock the phone, they jailbreak and hack the software for a "temporary" unlock. My suggestion is to check with your carrier about it and if at all possible go that route, it will be well worth it.

The phone can then be used on another carrier's network or on a pay as you go basis. Also increases the resale value.

Unlocking is not to be confused with "jailbreaking" which is sometimes referred to as unlocking.
We're talking about the ability of the phone to be used internationally by putting in another SIM from another company. No security is compromised.
