I got my macbook pro two days ago, and now I'm really in need of a program that can open .rar files. I went to the winrar website and downloaded the OSX version of the program, but no matter what I do, I can't get it to install.

The folder I downloaded came with 7 text files, and three other files with gray icons: default.sfx, rar, and unrar. But whenever I click any of these things, all that happens is a text document opens up! Nothing to install the program starts.

I don't get what I'm doing wrong. I've tried downloading the OSX version of this from several places, but the same thing always happens.

The copy you downloaded was a command line version (the WinRAR people do not make a GUI version for non-Windows platforms). I would suggest that you get a copy of something that has a UI especially if you are new to the platform. And for the sake of providing you with more options, there is UnRarX which works well if all you're looking to do is decompress rar files.

Okay, thanks guys. I installed unrar and was able to extract the files I wanted to another folder.

But now I another problem. :Grimmace: When I click on the files, I get a message saying "there is no default application to open" the document. The files are .r00 and .r01 and so on. What application am I supposed to have now?

The Unarchiver will do it, though sometimes it struggles to piece together split rar's.
Highlight the last numbered .rar, and then go to the file menu>open with> the unarchiver.

Alternatively try unrarx, a program that never fails to join rar's.

Okay, well I'm happy to say that the Unarchiver did the job!:D The unrarx program was the one that couldn't do it. Thanks everyone!

Just a recommendation in case you have issues in the future. I have found that an archive application called BetterZip to never let me down. It's not free but a first rate Archive application for OSX.

Glad though that Unarchiver did the job for you.
