Hi There,

I am new on this forum,

I hope to post in the right spot, otherwise sorry.

I have a proble with my OLD but still WORKING iMac late 2006, with operating system Snow Leopard.

In the last weeks, I can not use anymore, FACETIME, rather than HANGOUT....

Do you now if are there still video chat option which can still be used for this operating system??

Thanks in advance, for your attention, I hope to have some feedback...

I was going to suggest Skype.app, but I'm afraid, I think, that OS X 10.9 is now required and they won't let older versions run.

Maybe check here:
https://www.skype.com/en/get-skype/
https://support.skype.com/en/faq/fa10328/what-are-the-system-requirements-for-skype

or maybe even try using a google search and check this:
https://www.tekrevue.com/skype-versions-supported-os-x/

PS: No guarantee any of those versions will still actually work.

As I mentioned previously, it seems that mac OS X 10.9.x is required as a minimum to run Skype since March 2017.

Microsoft is disabling older versions of Skype for Mac and Windows on March 1[2017]
JORDAN NOVET@JORDANNOVET FEBRUARY 3, 2017 3:23 PM

Microsoft wants you to have the latest and greatest Skype experience. If you want the old Skype, well, tough.

The company said today that starting on March 1 — less than 30 days from now — people will no longer be able to sign in to version 7.16 of Skype for Windows desktop and older versions, and version 7.18 of Skype for Mac and older versions thereof.

“If you’re one of those users, all you’ll need to do is download the new update,” the Skype team said in a blog post.
https://venturebeat.com/2017/02/03/...ions-of-skype-for-mac-and-windows-on-march-1/

I ran into this a few months ago when I needed to use my older Skype version 6.x??? I believe, and I'm running Mavericks v. 10.9.5.

The old version would just not work with a message to update. No other options, period!!!

And I don't know of any other voice/video apps that would still run or work with SL 10.6.8. Anyone any ideas???

EDIT:
I don't know if the old version of Jitsi will still work, and I've never used it, but it's still available here and it's compatible with 10.6. - 10.7. :

I'm wondering why the OP can no longer use FaceTime? He never mentioned why although he does say his iMac is a 2006 model running Snow Leopard. As for Skype and other MS apps, it seems MS wants everyone to be on the latest and greatest MS offerings. :(

I just need someting to "video chat" with them, since I am living abroad( Finland) finishing my bachelor degree in Sport Managment... so that´s way I am good in sport but not with Computer....

Shame because the computer is just running fine,....

But again THANKS SOOOO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME!O:)O:)O:)

I'm wondering why the OP can no longer use FaceTime?

The last few times I tried to use FaceTime it was a hassle to get it to work, IF it even did, and I was using Mavericks at the time.

As I recalled when using SL, it was about the same. No guarantee it would work so I basically avoided even trying to use it and encouraged family members to use Skype when we were involved. It also allowed three-way conversations that FT doesn't.

EDIT:
I just checked Apple's rather feeble support article for FaceTime requirements and it's NOT exactly helpful:
The person you’re making a FaceTime audio call to must be signed in to FaceTime and have any of the following:
A Mac with OS X 10.9.2 or later, and a built-in or connected microphone
An iOS device with iOS 7 or later
https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/facetime/facetime-requirements-fctm35515/mac

Not much about the requirements the actual CALLER needs unless I missed something. But it does say things should be OK if TM is installed.

Yeah right!!! ;P

BTW: FaceTime v. 1.0.5 that works with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 is available from the App Store for about $1.40. Apple was restricted from providing it free as they wanted to do. It was included with Lion 10.7.x and later.

@lucamasieri

Can you give us an idea what happens when he tries FaceTime? Does it simply not launch or is there an error message that appears? If it was working until recently there is probably a simple solution/explanation.

Thanks for translating that message. I'll see if I can work out a solution for this. Since it was working until recently, we shoou0ld be able to get things working again.

Have you tried Google's Hangout??? Maybe it just might work better but I've never used it but it looks promising.

Neither do I know what the receiving user needs to have running or even installed.

Try going to:
https://hangouts.google.com

EDIT:
At least there's some promise and hope that HANGOUT should work according to this:

System and browser requirements
