Hi all,

I have a Macbook 10.6.8.

I can not listen to any audio, the volume is greyed + there is a stop sign displayed. I do not have the option to mute/unmute nor turn it up/down, or on/off. It's just off.

Please can someone help me find a solution?

Many thanks,
Emma

It's possible that your output source isn't set correctly. Head over to System Preferences > Sound > Output. In there, make sure the appropriate output source is selected. If that doesn't work, it's possible that Core Audio is acting odd. Open up Activity Monitor and force quit the "coreaudiod" process (it will restart itself).

Hey,

Thanks very much for your advice. I tried it and no joy.

I did I did force quit the "coreaudiod" process.

I also checked 'System preferences' and 'sound' and in the list and in the 'name' column it says "digital out" and to the right of that in the 'type' column it says optical digital-out port. I would not know what the 'appropriate output source' and it is selected. I can not select another as this is the only one in the list

I have been using a audio cable to connect the Mac to a sterio to play music and the only other things i did before this happened was I changed some screen settings under 'energy saver'.

Many thanks,
Emma

It's very possible that your sound output is "stuck" in digital mode which would kill the regular sound output. Try a PRAM reset and if that doesn't work, also try a SMC reset. Let us know....
