Based on comments made by members I have grown to trust and appreciate, I have purchased Tinker Tool System 7. I have not done anything with it, just looked at it. (Actually, it is a little scary looking.)

Here's my question: At System Preferences>Security & Privacy>Privacy>Full Disk Access (which Tinker Tool System asked me to allow), I noticed that one of the apps with a check mark is "smbd". What is that? Is that okay?

FYI The other existing Full Disk Access check marks are at: Malware Protection, Onyx, Find Any File, and ClamXav. I know you guys think antivirus apps on a Mac are dead weight, but those of us who grew up on, and spent decades on, DOS & Windows operating systems, are unable to fall asleep at night unless an AV cop is outside our door.

Are you using File Vault encryption?

SMBD enables file sharing with Windows computers. If you want great protection use Detect X Swift anbd Intego Virus Barrier for malware and any other threats you may pickup.

I do not know what that is, so I assume not.

SMBD enables file sharing with Windows computers.

I don't share files -- or anything else -- with Windows computers (intentionally).
Accordingly, I think I will uncheck it, and see what happens, if anything.
(tick tick tick tick ....)

If you want great protection use Detect X Swift and Intego Virus Barrier for malware and any other threats you may pickup.

Is that instead of "Malwarebytes" and "ClamXav"?

Yes, it is instead. All you need is DetectX Swift and/or VirusScanBarrier. And don't install ANY resident malware product. You don't need it, they don't do anything and they just take up CPU/memory. You need to get rid of the Windows mentality toward the risks. I, too, spent decades with Windows/DOS, and at first it seems strange to put aside that constant worry, but the threats to macOS are not nearly as virulent or prevalent as in the Windows world.

As a Windows user for over 40 years (DOS thru W10) and a recent convert to Macs, I can understand your death grip on running anti-virus. It took me a while to just let it go on my macs. Now I run a scanner monthly for malware - Malwarebytes (scanner only) and DetectX Swift ( I like to use both) and that is it. Neither ever find anything.

Eventually you will find the anti-virus apps will slow stuff down and decide to get rid of them

I have removed (with App Zapper) ClamXav and Malwarebytes.
I installed DetectX Swift and VirusBarrier Scanner (ever cautious, I took "and/or" to mean "and").

At the DetectX Swift "Profile" some ClamXav and Malware remnants appeared (see below). If I can figure out how, I will remove them.

Thank you all.
