I hope that I am not duplicating this thread my apologies in advance.
After the latest Mac Update 23 July I have a folder on the desktop which then shows Configuration, also What are Relocated items within. On clicking on this item there is another folder labeled Private which has another folder labeled etc My question what do I with it. Is it safe to delete it or store it somewhere? Any guidance will be most welcome

Also, there is a specific ? attached to the folder which explains what it is. It's the same explanation that Jake linked you to.

My apologies. There doesn't appear to be a link in your answer. I have opened up the file and the explanation is still unclear. I am still confused as to the correct course of action. Your guidance please.

The icon on your Desktop, is only an alias, you can delete it.

On my Mac, it's contained in my Shared user profile.

I now have 18 of these "Previously relocated" folders 1.3 -1.4Mb each in size. I'm not concerned about the space used but I have never had to do as suggested in the explanation below nor would I know when or how to go about it.

"To restore any of the custom configurations, compare your modifications with the configuration changes made during the macOS upgrade and combine them when possible."

Do I need to keep them all or just the most recent or what?

And it seems very nice that they include a nice readme file "What Are Relocated Items" that probably explains what it is all about in case you wanted to read it. ;)

I not only read it Patrick, but quoted it in my first post. The doc cannot be opened so how do I compare it, what do I compare it with and where is it? None of this is explained.

Sorry Rod, I don't know how missed you earlier post, or just didn't bother reading it properly, but the explanation they gave must have been when Apple was farming out their English translations to some firm in the Orient or somewhere, or maybe some other planet that speaks some odd language. It makes absolutely no sense at all.

And why it's some oddball file that won't open is just as odd.

Thank goodness, it's not just me. I'm very tempted to just delete all of the "Previously" relocated folders. Maybe just keep the most current "Relocated" items folder.

Additional: Found an article (in English) that explains the whole thing: Relocated Items on Mac: What is master.passwd.system_default

Good find Rod, and interesting for those with such folders.

Just glancing through that article I guess I would be wondering what exactly "configuration files" are or are they just a new type of Mac file???

Oh well, I doubt I will ever get around to owning or using a Monterey based Mac in my lifetime. So no worries about the relocated files on my end.
