I have an iMac 2012 using Mojave 10.14.6 and an iPhone 7 15.4.1. Until recently, if my iMac displayed a WhatsApp notification I could click on the nofication and the already-running WhatsApp would open the message. For some weeks now, when I click on the notification it simply vanishes. The message is present when I open WhatsApp from the menu bar. On the iPhone clicking on a notification opens WhatApp 'correctly'.

I feel sure I must have inadvertently altered some setting on the iMac, either for Notifications or for Whatsapp, but I can't seem to fix it. The WhatsApp on the iMac is Version 2.2210.9

Any suggestions will be welcome.

Hi David,

Latest version of WhatsApp is 2.2212.8. Whether updating the App will help, I can't say, but it's a good idea to establish that practice for increased security.

Now on your iMac, open WhatsApp. When it opens up, go to the top menu bar of your iMac, far left, and Click on the WhatsApp icon. From the dropdown, Click on Preferences, then choose Notifications.

That opens a sliding window, and it is there that you choose exactly how you want your Notifications to appear/Sound?Alerts/Show preview etc.

Hope that helps.

Thank you Ian.

1. WhatsApp version: I can find nowhere in WhatsApp to initiate an update. What is the trick?

2. Under Notifications there are 7 check boxes.
Sounds: checked
Desktop Alerts: checked
Show Previews: un-checked. (I've tried checking this one - no improvement)
Turn off all reactions notifications: un-checked
Incoming call ringtone: checked
Turn off all desktop incoming calls: unchecked

There are 128 different combinations, and each test requires a new incoming WhatsApp message ....

Can you suggest which of the options is worth further study?

Thanks again.

David

Hi David, and thank you for your kind reply. The only difference between our choices is that I have "Show Previews" checked.

A coupe of days ago, when I opened WhatsApp on my iMac, I got this message to reinstall WhatsApp to the iMac - no reason given. But I did and all was well.

You have that option at any time. Should you wish to. You, so far, have not been required to do so. But you can in this way:

On your iPhone, open the app, tap on Settings (bottom far right); then Click on "Linked Devices".

From there you have 2 choices: "Log Out" or - "Link Device". You can use the latter to re-establish a new link between your iPhone and your iMac. It involves scanning the QR Code on your Mac's screen. Dead easy to do, but whether that sorts out your problem I cannot guarantee.

Another approach is to Open WhatsApp on your iPhone, Go into Settings and Click on Notifications. Here, you will find:

MESSAGE NOTIFICATIONS

Show Notifications (should be ON)
Sound - your choice
Reaction Notifications (ON)

GROUP NOTIFICAIONS

Show Notifications (ON)
Sound - again your choice; it can be different from Message Sound if you want (I don't)
Reaction Notifications (ON)

In-App Notifications

Click on this for choices:

ALERT STYLE

None - Banners - Alerts (Your choice, I use Banners)
Sounds (ON)
Vibrate (ON)

Show Preview (ON)

Finally - in desperation - "Reset Notifications Settings" which means starting from scratch.

Best I can offer, David.

Thanks again, Ian. I've followed your suggestions and even somehow succeeded in upgrading the iMac WhatsApp to 2.2212.8.

All I need now is for someone to send me WhatsApp messages so I can test it all. I will report back.
