Which Disk format should I use for sparse bundle disk image for Imovie Library

I have a Macbook Pro with the harddrive formated for APFS.
I have been working on my imovie & iphoto with the library stored in external HD which are formated for Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
I want to create a spare bundle disk image which will be saved to my Synology NAS drive and I will move these libraries to that disk image.

The question is what format should I choose for the disk image? Would it be Mac OS Extended to match the external drives it's been saved on thus far or should I make it APFS to match my MacBook harddrive format? Does it matter?

I would suggest and think you would use the format that any Mac or computer you might need or want to use to access any of the files you have stored on that drive would be the format for that Drive to use.

I don't know if there is any third-party software available that allows any computer, other than recent Mac models, to access APFS formatted data volumes, so I would sure be inclined to stick to the older tried and true Mac OS Extended Journaled HFS Plus format.

Both the APFS and Mac OS Extended is good for Mac but I'm wondering if it matters which one I format my Disk image for?

The same reasons apply, whether formatting a disk drive or disk image, they are all Mac volumes as far as the macOS is concerned, at least as far as I know:

Try this if still undecided:
APFS vs. Mac OS Extended: Which Should You Pick?

Or this:

Bottom line:
Create a disk image using Disk Utility on Mac
Click the Format pop-up menu, then choose the format for the disk:

If the disk image will be used with a Mac that has a solid state drive (SSD) and uses macOS 10.13 or later, choose APFS or APFS (Case-sensitive).

If the disk image will be used with a Mac with macOS 10.12 or earlier, choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled).

If the disk image will be used with a Mac or Windows computer and is 32 GB or less, choose MS-DOS (FAT); if it’s over 32 GB, choose ExFAT.

I have not been able to get APFS to work for the exact scenario you are asking about. I tried using a sparse disk image (not bundle) with no encryption, and GUID partition map. This will mount on the local mac book air or iMac (intel or M2) just fine but will not mount from the sinology NAS over SMB.
It will however work if I use Mac OS Extended.
