Wireless keyboard won't connect

All of a sudden, my wireless keyboard no longer connects to bluetooth. When I turn the keyboard on, it shows me the window with the code I need to key in, but it shows the little circle thing within the window spinning. Not he colored cursor wheel that spins, this is the one within the window. While it's spinning, I can't enter anything. Then it disappears. The light on the keyboard flashes twice quickly and then repeats.

I've had this keyboard for a few years now and never an issue. I've of course tried restarting. I've tried putting in fresh batteries. Nothing works. Does anyone have any ideas?

Try turning off BT and then back on again. If that doesn't work, try an SMC reset. You'll need to look up the Apple instructions on how to do that for your model. If that fails to work, it may be a hardware problem with the keyboard itself. Make sure other BT devices can connect such as a wireless mouse. It's also possible BT has failed.

And it always helps to mention which Mac you have (year and model) and what version of OS X you're running. Keeps us from guessing. ;)

Thanks for the reply! Bluetooth is working fine as my mouse is not having any issues at all. It's only the keyboard. It's strange that the mac does read it, but I can't enter in the number that comes up on the screen because that little wheel keeps spinning. Do you think it's possible it could be a bluetooth issue still when the mouse works fine?

And yes, forgot to mention. It's a late 2013 Macbook Pro running 10.12.4

I seriously risk exposing my ignorance here; but suppose you turn off BT on your iMac, say - without a wired Mouse or other BT Mouse, how do you turn it on again? I'm assuming for this question that you don't have a Trackpad either.

And for good measure, say you have a wired Keyboard, don't suppose any key combination can turn on BT?

We so often advise turning BT off, then on again. Just wondered how.

Hi Reflex - check this LINK to see if any of the suggestions help - of course and if available, you could try another BT KB on your computer and/or test your KB on another Mac - if you are close to an Apple store or authorized Apple re-seller, then yet another consideration.

@ Ian - I have a USB corded mouse and KB in the closet in our computer room, so at least can be back in business if the BT devices malfunction for whatever reason. But as to your questions above, this OSXDaily Article has a variety of steps - scroll down to the bottom - now, I've not given this advice a try, sorry. Dave :)

Nice find, Dave.

I've printed this out since, if BT is off, I wouldn't be able to locate the article.

Thanks so much for for time and patience.

Hi Ian - no problem at all - I've bookmarked the site on my laptop. But for those w/ just a BT KB/Mouse, a corded USB backup is suggested - these are cheap these days - I bought a 'combo' from Amazon for the price shown below. Dave :)

And what exactly is this keyboard ~ an Apple Wireless Keyboard, the Magic Keyboard or some other species?

All electronic goods can and do fail. I would never be without my old wired setup as a stand by. Mind you newer iMacs are much quicker to connect.

Thanks Dave and everyone else. I tried everything in the article and the same problem persists. I think i'll try the idea of going to the Apple store and see if they can help me.
