Just an update for those who may be interested.

The SSD I was booting my M1 Mac mini from failed recently. I had one or two others around but they were either too small or of the same vintage as the drive that failed so I broke into the piggy bank and got the enclosure and drive Randy recommended above.

I received the order around the 19th of this month and installation was a breeze. Reloading things has been a PITA because my most recent backup was not current due to some of the Time Machine issues others have had but that's a me thing not a drive problem.

This drive and enclosure combination is indeed wicked fast and rivals the internal drive for speed. It's probably a little faster than the SSD that failed but that drive no longer mounts so I can't test that.

The only issue I've had is that the first enclosure had to be replaced. It was whisper quiet a first but the fain began making quite a bit of noise after about two days. It (the fan) must have failed entirely because the Mac started shutting down of its own accord and when it did the enclosure was quite hot. A replacement was sent out as soon as I contacted Amazon and so far all is well.

Sly, did you see the other one on that page, the X9 for $109.99? Still 2TB, but 1050MB/s.

Speaking of alternative choices how is this for an external SSD, which has a crazy price that popped up as an ad while I was browsing that sure made me take a look, especially at the crazy price it was offered at:

Too good to be true comes to mind...

It's good that it came to your mind, because it is.

Folks on the Macintosh onsultant's list noticed these Chinese SSD's and purchased some to see what was going on. They have what amounts to a cheap (small) SD card inside, manipulated so that it reports that it has a huge amount of storage space. It doesn't. And what little that it has is slow. It's a huge scam.

No one here should be gullible enough to fall for this.

I missed that at the time and I was in a bit of a hurry. I wanted to get my hands on the Samsung 990 before somebody changed their mind and upped the price. That's usually what happens to me.

Given my recent history I'm thinking about grabbing one. The drive I'm using and a backup for the moment is one I've had for a while. I had been backing up to my Synology box but something has gone haywire and it doesn't seem to be letting me reset the password at the moment.

I can almost hear my maternal grandfather saying, "That's too much candy for a dime".

An external 16TB SSD being offered for just over one dollar has to set off mental alarms for even a moron!
Apparently not or these places wouldn't be in business for very long.

Thanks Randy.

I wondered how they might attempt to meet the specs they provided in their ad and sell the devices at that price.

I'm puzzled. I just ordered the SSD in question but the blurb seems to indicate it's an external not internal device? So fans and shut downs wouldn't apply surely?.

In post # 3 ( #3 ) there was a different SSD & Enclosure, with built in fan, mentioned.

Several different drives have been mentioned in this thread so which particular solid state drive did you actually order and what did his description say in its order number?
And I'm not sure I understand what you mean by your statement:
"So fans and shut downs wouldn't apply surely?."

You might want to double check the actual specs of the actual device you actually ordered I would think and save all the hassles of returns Etc and possible added expenses.

@MacBiter As Bob and Patrick have mentioned this thread has covered three different drives. The first post mentioned one external Crucial SSD and a second one got a passing mention later on. If you are using those drives heat isn't likely to be an issue.

The drive Randy mentioned in post #3 is different. It can be used internally with some computers but needs some type of enclosure to work with most Macs because the internal drive can't be removed. It works fine when put in an enclosure and used as an external. If the drive overheats the Mac reboots with little/no warning.

Given the sounds coming from the enclosure, and how hot it felt, I assume the fan was failing and causing the Samsung external drive to overheat.

Ah ok. I've constantly commented about the original sale Crucial 2TB SSD external drive, which is the one I've ordered, so all should be well :) .
