iDevices are closed systems (unless you're foolish enough to Jailbreak it). You can only get OS updates/upgrades from Apple.

You can only get apps from the App Store that goes through validation from Apple.

You cannot download any from a browser that would cause any harm.

anti virus software for ipad/iphone

There isn't any because, as said above, you don't need it.

Moderator Ashwin explains why it isn't needed. :)

Thanks; just curious as to why I wouldn't need it.

Two reasons.

First reason: Unless you live in the EU, you can only download software for your iPhone and iPad from the App Store. Apple vets all software allowed in the App Store, and they specifically check to make sure that an app contains no malware. So, there is no vector for malware to find it's way into your iPhone or iPad. You don't need anti-virus software to protect you from something that's not there.

(Folks who live in the EU have iPhones and iPads that have access to purchase software from other sources than the App Store. But if you value your iPhone’s security, you shouldn’t. Having all of your software meet Apple’s guidelines, and be vetted by Apple, is invaluable as far as security goes. )

Second reason: *ALL* anti-virus software for the iPhone is a scam, and you shouldn’t throw your money away on it. How can I make such a blanket statement? Apple requires that all software on the iPhone and iPad be sandboxed. That means that no third party application can access and/or modify another. That being the case, any anti-virus software that you purchase from the App Store is absolutely *INCAPABLE* of scanning your iPhone for malware. It's also incapable of deleting any malware if it were able to find any. In other words, it’s impossible to meet Apple’s guidelines for software and create a functional anti-virus program. So all such programs are worthless, and a scam.

Apple fully intended for the iPhone and the iPad to be completely locked down and entirely secure. It's a selling point. This is one of the big reasons that the iPhone and the iPad are superior to cheaper imitations.

You may remember in the news a few years ago that the FBI tried to force Apple to create a back door into the iPhone so that they could access the data on suspect's iPhones. That's how secure the iPhone is...not even the FBI can get in.

The only folks on the Internet who will tell you that iPhones and iPads get viruses are the folks who want to sell you something. Don't be duped.
