Can not update my macbookpro from 10.5.8 to the latest version. Need the app store.

Problem-
Can not update from 10.5.8
Need the app store to purchase the latest version.
Can not get the app store, when i do software update it informs me there are no new updates at this time.
All of my university friends have not had this problem and they all have the app store.

:'(

Any insight on this problem would be much appreciated.

The app store is not supported under 10.5 (Leopard), you'd need to upgrade to 10.6 (Snow Leopard) first.

Depending on the specs, your MBP may not run Lion (10.7).

How do i update to 10.6, when i tried to pay for the latest update, it said you can purchase this update through the app store, and if you don't have the app store click software update to download this.

You have two choices basically... you can either upgrade to Snow Leopard first ($30, physical disk) and then subsequently download Lion, or you can buy the physical copy of Lion available here:

Frankly, Lion isn't worth it in my view. If you really feel the itch to upgrade, just go to Snow Leopard and stop there.

I want to upgrade to 10.6, i assume there is no way to upgrade over the internet & that i am going to need a physical copy.

Edit: i may upgrade to lion so i can sync with my iphone 4 and make it compatible with icloud.

You are correct. You'll need a hard copy. Lion was the first version of OS X to be distributed via download.

You can also get it elsewhere a few bucks cheaper (like Amazon).

One last question as you have been so helpful, can i order a physical copy of lion over the web and jump straight from 10.5.8 to Lion, or will i need snow leopard first. Meaning I'd have to pay to upgrade twice.

I don't know for sure, but I suspect you can upgrade directly from 10.5 to Lion, using the physical media. I have no personal experience with it, but since 10.6 did a straight upgrade from 10.5 and really Lion is not all that different from 10.6 under-the-hood, I'd be surprised if it couldn't do a straight upgrade from 10.5.

If you end up ordering directly from Apple, I would probably ask that question ahead of time, just to be certain.
