Mods - I hope this is posted in the correct forum, but my inquiry actually covers two facets: an ECG Watch, linked to an iPhone 7 or other. Please transfer to the Phone forum if necessary. Thank you.

I live in NZ and own a 128 GB iPhone 7 running iOS 15.8.3.

My GP has recommended I buy an ECG Watch to measure heart rate when it goes off the Richter (Wreckter?) scale overnight. I’m not going to pay Apple's prices, which are astronomical compared with other brands.

I also own Samsung, and HTC, phones, neither of which have connected and operating SIM cards (long story).

May I have thoughts and advice from people with experience of an ECG watch, not necessarily Apple, with Phone model and OS similar to or same as that mentioned.

Samsung Gear is cheaper than Apple Watch and has ECG capabilities.

You might find other devices that aren't smart watches that might have this as well.

You might even want to try a generalized Google search and check out some of the hits you get:

What watches have ECG capabilities?

Apple and their high prices certainly aren't the only game in town. 😉

Thank you Ashwin, Patrick & Bob.

I'm in the depths of the darkest forest in respect of a smart watch, as until now I could not justify the necessity or expenditure. Recent health developments may have forced, or at least pushed, a change to that mindset.

One that may fit the bill - and possibly the budget - is this
which is about US$212. Is that an expected and acceptable price in the US?

I know I can buy cheaper to match with Android, but 'you gets what you pays for'. An Apple watch would be great, but not with an old iPhone 7 like I have/use, so I'm painted into a corner, ie. either paying double for modern devices in iPhone and Watch; or making do with what appears to me to be a wider tolerance with Android. Samsung seems to go along with that.

Coincidentally, this site may be helpful to others in a situation similar to mine

You can get a clone of an Apple Watch that is so inexpensive, it's practically disposable. But the thing is almost indistinguishable from a real Apple Watch.

Smartwatch with Call Answering - 1.8" HD Display, Wireless 5.3, Silicone Band, 105+ Sports Modes, Fitness & Step Tracker, Compatible with Android & iPhone

$8 u.s. (sorry, I don't know what they would charge if you logged in from NZ.)

These things are stunning. It's almost exactly like an Apple Watch. It works with both Android phones and iPhones.

My wife, who is a physician, will tell you that no watch, Apple or otherwise, can very accurately tell you your blood pressure and ECG. But I'm guessing that you don't need such a watch to be medical grade, just to keep track of what's generally going on. It should be fine for that.

Thank you Randy, that link has expired, the product is no longer avilable. For my own reasons I prefer not to buy Chinese-made electronic devices, even tho I know Samsung is probably made there.

Your wife is right, a smart watch would be an indicator only, but as something like AF can occur mostly in the middle of the night, rushing off to a local medical centre to be hooked up to a sophisticated machine is simply not feasible. ECG reading patterns will however give a reasonable indication of the need for possible other intervention.

Every single one of the Macintoshes that you have purchased in the last 15 years, any Apple Watches, any iPads, etc., has been made in China. Every..single..one.

It's a little late to start boycotting Chinese-made products. It's not accomplishing anything except for assuring that you pay about 30 times (or more) as much as you have to for your smart Watch.

I looked it up, and Samsung doesn't make their smart watches in China. They used to, but it cost them too much to make them there. ( ! ) So they ceased manufacturing their stuff in China and now they make their stuff in Vietnam. Is that better? I'm not sure.

The link I gave you probably didn't work because we are in different countries. I suggest that you use the general URL for Temu:

and do a search for "smart watches". There will be a bunch of choices. Get the one that looks suspiciously identical to an Apple Watch, at about one thirtieth the price. (But only if you want to avoid paying a LOT for a name brand smart watch.)

And an another alternative site that handles products from all over Asia that I have had excellent results with is Aliexpress.

Try a Google search on Aliexpress ECG Watch and you should end up at the site something like this one and do further searching among them for exactly what you need or want. Delivery times may take a bit longer than some online shopping areas but they usually provide a date and tracking:

Check with your doctor before ordering to make sure you are ordering something that would meet his suggestions. There's an awful lot of choices out there, so read and choose carefully as to what your exact needs are. 😉

Thank you. My dr (she, Belgian) is trying to work in collaboration with the practice manager to purchase a bulk lot of ECG watches to hire out to patients (like me).

My own homework, which has been about as much as I can manage, has included Parallel Import, AliExpress and Temu. My problem is getting past the promotional @#%^! to get at the hard facts. So far, Samsung leads the pack, in part because its Galaxy Watch6 is compatible with earlier AndroidOS.
