i often am working on two documents and would like to assign a mouse to each. Sometimes they are on separate screens.

As the title asks, is there a way to assign one mouse to each document?

I have one of these Logitech M720 USB(dongle)/BT Mouse that I believe has that ability but I have never tried using it and it can provide three such separate options.

I just use it as an single acting USB wireless mouse and its 8th hidden thumb button that they removed from the later models of their M705 Mouse, even though they kept exactly the same model name. And they don't even bother mentioning the fact that they did so. Not impressed Logitech.

Details here:

When my Magic Mouse falls on the floor (it happens!) and loses Bluetooth connection, I use Mighty Mouse via USB to reconnect. After Magic reconnects to Bluetooth, Mighty still works, so effectively (under those circumstances) I have 2 mice.

Not sure what 2 mice will bring, I have had a laptop with pad and mouse both active, but you only have one cursor, so if working on 2 documents on 2 screens you still have to move the cursor across. - or have I misunderstood.

That is going to be nearly impossible. The issue is not the mouse, but the cursor input. Any given user has ONE cursor, and that cursor location defines the "focus" for the system so that any clicks on the mouse affects THAT location. But if there are two cursors and the system receives a "click" signal, it doesn't know which mouse sent the signal, and which cursor to react to. Also, if there were two complete systems simultaneously running for a two-mouse setup, you would still have to move the mouses around when doing things like cut-paste from one to the other, for example. There would have to be two clipboards for the various mouse inputs, so if you cut with Mouse 1 and want to paste into document 2, you would have to move Mouse 1 to Document 2 even if Mouse 2 was already there. You wold not want the two clipboards to mix/match actions like that because of the potential to really make a mess of things.

Frankly, I would think the effort to move from one mouse to another would be greater than moving the cursor from one document to another. You can set the mouse acceleration to be such that a short, sharp movement gets from one screen to the other, the slow down to get exactly where you want in the new document. That's how I use one mouse with two screens, and it seems to work well.

I'm pretty sure that is what the Logitech M720 mouse is designed to do using its three discreet buttons, and each button can be dedicated to a single project.

I do not have a multiple display setup but I just tried pushing two of the other buttons on the mouse pretending I had a different display and the mouse on my single display monitor stayed put and didn't move when I move the mouse. Of course the mouse beeped pushed one of the currently non-usable buttons as so was no other screen for it to utilise.

I don't know if Logitech provides demo units or not but it is a nice Mouse to use just normally with a single display and it's quite often on sale either at Amazon.c or Staples.ca and others. They also include a programmable 8th button as a hidden thumb button utilising the Logitech Options software.

EDIT:
Maybe try a Google search for how the Logitech M720 mouse actually works and uses its three designation buttons:

Also, have a look at this video especially starting at the 7:10 timeline mark, it shows the most working with three separate computers:

Each computer seems to have its own cursor once the appropriate button on the mouse is clicked.

I have a Magic Mouse and a Magic Trackpad connected to my Mac. I can use them both/either whenever I want, but the cursor will only be in one location at the time. Both devices will still start/stop wherever the pointer is.

flyboyy, I may have misunderstood the intention here but these days with split screen, tiling and Mission Control (as I use it) with multiple desktops, I can't see the advantage of two mice an cursors still, I'm glad the suggestions given seem to be working for you.
