I see that john lewis (Uk store) has 2021 / 2022 and 2024 ipad models
the 2021 is £270 but the 2024 is over twice the price £559

i'm assuming with the approx 6years IOS updates and 2yr security updates - the 2021 model will last until 2029 - but the 2024 until 2032

apart from spec , processor etc , is that about it
As safari is part of OS , then i guess websites may have issues with the older version in 5 years time

have a 2014 ipad which wont charge - so looking to replace that now - which has lasted 10years ALL OK

That is a decision only you can make. You did get long use from your current model. There is a chance (either way) that the new model you choose will (will not) last as long.

The age of the model is less relevant than which processor it uses (the rest of the spec is entirely down to your needs / preferences). Remember that the processor improvement curve of iOS devices is beginning to flatten compared to the first years of Apple silicon.

As for Safari, I personally haven't noticed much of a difference between OS14 and OS17. However, OS18 may bring more fundamental enhancements, e.g. AI?.

as an update , i went into john lewis and they confirmed my approach for the age issues and support

but they also mentioned that some New 2024 entry level ipads are expected before xmas , much cheaper than the current PRO version on sale - so will have to see what arrives
