I have a mid-2015, 15" MBP that likely requires a new battery. The battery status [top right on screen] states that maintenance is recommended.

After boot up and logon, as soon as I begin opening programs the laptop goes into "sleep mode" unless it is plugged in to A/C. Once it has gotten over the initial power drain from starting programs then I am able to disconnect A/C and run on battery until it drains down [approximately a few hours later].

When looking for the proper replacement battery, I am required to know the A# [e.g. Axxxx, where xxxx is a four-digit number]. Where do I find this #?

Thanks

On the underside of the mac, you'll see the A# right next to Designed by Apple in California.

You can also visit OWC to get details about the battery.

Thanks for the quick reply. A1398.

Also, thanks for the link. I linked to the OWC site and it recommended "professional installation". Is that necessary? I cannot imagine that it could be terribly complicated [maybe just CYA?] because it also includes a DIY video.

Can't speak to the replacement effort, haven't done that. I know some of the MBP's have the battery nicely glued down and require a lot of effort to replace.

You can also check iFixIt to see the tear down videos/instructions for your vintage MBP and see how hard/easy it looks.

If I did the search correctly here's the link to OWC's page for your battery and the kit that they recommend for replacing it. Before you purchase the kit I suggest you double check to make sure it's the right part. There's also an installation video that will probably give you an idea why professional installation is recommended.

I"ve ordered parts from them on several occasions and found the information accurate. I've also called their support line once or twice, many years ago, and found them very helpful.

I have one and I agree. The **** thing is glued in somehow. I can't find anyone around here to do it so I'm trying to sell it.

A Couple Of More Options:
Apple has some Do It Yourself repair guides. Perhaps there is one for your computer- if the project's of interest to you. PowerBookMedic also has lots of guides. I have purchased parts from them and it always works out great.

A mere 74 steps, eh? And then, all 74 have to be reversed before you're done. That's a lot of opportunities to break or mangle something.
I can see why they recommend letting a pro do the job - this one's not for the faint of heart. Probably not a cheap job, given the time involved, but I would have to think about handing this one off. (And this is coming from somebody who's been into the guts of numerous iMacs and MacBooks over the years.)
